Chapter 8 - BOX 417

The bank opened Box 417 under court supervision.
Martin.
Lucy.
Scarlett.
Two detectives.
And a federal attorney stood inside the secure vault.
The manager inserted the key.
Metal clicked.
The box slid open.
Inside were two folders.
One belonged to Rebecca.
One to Elaine.
Scarlett touched her mother’s handwriting.
Her fingers trembled.
Lucy opened Rebecca’s folder.
Original patent documents.
Original ownership agreements.
Letters to Martin.
Photographs of Lucy as a baby.
Martin picked up one photograph.
Rebecca stood outside a tiny apartment holding newborn Lucy.
On the back:
She has your eyes.
Martin sat down.
Lucy looked away.
He whispered,
“I missed everything.”
She did not respond.
Scarlett opened Elaine’s folder.
Inside was a DNA report.
Victor Lang — 99.98% probability of paternity.
Scarlett stared at the page.
Martin looked at her.
She whispered,
“I don’t care.”
He stepped closer.
Scarlett’s voice cracked.
“You’re still my dad.”
Martin embraced her.
She broke down against his chest.
Lucy watched quietly.
Then Scarlett pulled away and wiped her tears.
“There’s something else.”
She removed a small voice recorder.
The battery was dead.
Federal agents took it for recovery.
The next document was more disturbing.
A handwritten timeline.
Elaine had listed dates.
Victor’s threats.
Payments.
Arguments.
One sentence was underlined three times.
V says if I tell Martin about Scarlett, he will make sure I lose everything.
Below it:
R.C. believes Victor stole her company. I believe her.
Lucy whispered,
“They were working together.”
Martin nodded.
“Trying to expose him.”
Then the federal attorney found something at the bottom.
A sealed plastic bag.
Inside was a hospital access badge.
St. Catherine’s Medical Center.
Lucy stared at it.
“That’s where Mom died.”
The badge belonged to:
NURSE MELISSA GRANT.
Lucy’s knees weakened.
Martin caught her.
“That must be the nurse Daniel mentioned.”
Federal agents searched records.
Melissa Grant had worked at St. Catherine’s for nine years.
She disappeared two days after Rebecca died.
Her bank account received $300,000 that same week.
Scarlett whispered,
“No.”
Lucy stared at the screen.
The final hospital record showed Melissa entered Rebecca’s room at 11:42 p.m.
Rebecca suffered cardiac arrest at 11:57.
Lucy stood.
“I was there.”
Everyone looked at her.
“I was asleep in the chair.”
Her voice became thin.
“She told me to rest.”
Martin approached.
“What do you remember?”
Lucy closed her eyes.
“The nurse came in.”
“What did she do?”
“She changed the IV.”
The room went silent.
Lucy opened her eyes.
“She told me Mom needed something for pain.”
Martin’s jaw tightened.
“Then?”
“I fell asleep.”
“You fell asleep?”
Lucy frowned.
“Hard.”
The federal attorney asked,
“Did you drink anything?”
Lucy’s face changed.
“A cup of tea.”
“Who gave it to you?”
Lucy whispered,
“The nurse.”
Scarlett grabbed her hand.
Lucy did not pull away.
Martin asked,
“Where is Melissa now?”
An agent answered.
“We don’t know.”
Scarlett turned.
“Find her.”
“We are.”
Lucy stared at her mother’s folder.
Then she noticed an envelope beneath the documents.
Her name was written across it.
LUCY — ONLY AFTER YOU FIND MARTIN.
She opened it.
Rebecca had written one page.
Lucy read aloud.
“Sweetheart, if you found the bank box, then Elaine did what she promised.”
Scarlett closed her eyes.
Lucy continued.
“She is braver than she knows.”
Scarlett began crying again.
Rebecca’s letter continued.
“Victor believes I am trying to take Hale Meridian from Martin.”
Lucy’s voice trembled.
“I’m not.”
Martin looked up.
“I want Martin to know what happened.”
Lucy continued.
“And then I want the company returned to the people it belongs to.”
Scarlett frowned.
“People?”
Lucy read the next line.
“Hale Meridian was never supposed to make one family rich.”
Martin looked confused.
Rebecca continued.
“The original plan included employee ownership.”
The attorney grabbed the old company agreement.
He flipped pages.
Then stopped.
“She’s right.”
Martin stared.
“What?”
“The original Carter-Hale charter allocated twenty percent of future equity to employees after profitability.”
Scarlett whispered,
“That never happened.”
Martin looked at Victor’s amended paperwork.
“No.”
Lucy understood.
“Victor didn’t only steal from Mom.”
Martin nodded slowly.
“He stole from thousands of employees.”
The scale of the betrayal became enormous.
The federal attorney’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face hardened.
“What?”
Everyone watched.
He hung up.
Martin asked,
“What happened?”
The attorney looked at Lucy.
“They found Melissa Grant.”
Lucy’s heart slammed.
“Where?”
“Wisconsin.”
“Is she alive?”
“Yes.”
Lucy exhaled.
The attorney continued.
“But somebody else found her first.”
Scarlett stepped forward.
“What does that mean?”
The attorney swallowed.
“Her house was attacked twenty minutes ago.”
Lucy whispered,
“Did she survive?”
He nodded.
“Barely.”
“And what did she say?”
The attorney looked toward Martin.
“Only five words.”
“What words?”
May you like
He answered,
“Victor was never the boss.”
