Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF A GOOD STORY

The reporters were waiting at every hotel entrance.

Lily escaped through the laundry loading dock.

Mateo drove her back to the overpass in his old pickup truck.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Mateo said, “You should take the job.”

Lily stared out the window.

“I do not know what the job is.”

“Neither does Nathaniel.”

“That is the problem.”

Mateo smiled.

“It means you get to decide.”

Lily looked at him.

“You always make things sound simple.”

“No.”

“I am old.”

“I no longer waste time making fear sound intelligent.”

Lily almost laughed.

When they reached the soup station, half the volunteers were holding phones.

The story had spread everywhere.

Millions of people had already watched a short video of Nathaniel confronting Bradford.

Someone had recorded it beneath the overpass.

Comments poured across the screen.

Some praised Lily.

Others accused the story of being staged.

Several people wanted to donate.

One woman had started an online fundraiser using Lily’s name without permission.

Lily felt sick.

“Shut it down,” she said.

A volunteer named Denise looked confused.

“It has raised ninety thousand dollars.”

“It is not ours.”

“They say it is for the community kitchen.”

“There is no community kitchen.”

“Not yet.”

Lily stared at the donation total.

Ninety-three thousand.

Then ninety-four.

Money was arriving faster than she had ever earned it.

But none of it felt safe.

“Contact the website.”

“Tell them we did not authorize the fundraiser.”

Denise hesitated.

“We could help a lot of people.”

“We can help people without lying to them.”

A black SUV stopped near the curb.

Nathaniel stepped out alone.

Lily continued arranging bread.

He approached carefully.

“I owe you an apology.”

She did not look at him.

“Did your company leak the story?”

“No.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Not yet.”

“Then do not promise me anything.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“That is fair.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“What is this?”

“A written commitment.”

Lily opened it.

The first page declared that the proposed community kitchen would operate as an independent nonprofit.

No photographs of guests without consent.

No donor branding in meal areas.

No executive authority over food eligibility.

A board containing former shelter residents, community workers, hotel employees, and Lily.

She looked up.

“You wrote this today?”

“My lawyers did.”

“You made lawyers write rules about soup?”

“They were terrified.”

Lily smiled despite herself.

Nathaniel continued.

“The annex will belong to the nonprofit under a ninety-nine-year lease.”

“The rent will be one dollar annually.”

“Harper Group will fund renovation and operating costs for ten years.”

“After that, an endowment will support it.”

Lily read the pages again.

“You planned all of this in a few hours?”

“I listened.”

The words struck her.

That was all she had wanted from Bradford fifteen years ago.

For someone to listen.

Nathaniel pointed to the last page.

“There is one blank section.”

She found it.

Executive director.

No name had been entered.

“That decision belongs to the board.”

“And who chooses the first board?”

“You do.”

Lily stared at him.

Nathaniel reached into his pocket.

He removed the folded napkin.

It was sealed inside a clear protective sleeve.

Lily’s breath caught.

“You kept it?”

“My mother did.”

The crooked letters remained visible.

WHEN I GET BIG, I WILL HELP YOU TOO.

Nathaniel placed it beside Rex.

“I spent years believing I had to repay you.”

“I was wrong.”

Lily looked at him.

“You do not need repayment.”

“You need a partner.”

Before Lily could answer, Denise rushed over.

“You need to see this.”

She held up her phone.

The unauthorized fundraiser had reached one hundred and twelve thousand dollars.

But the title had changed.

HELP LILY CARTER SUE HARPER GROUP.

Nathaniel’s expression darkened.

“I did not create that.”

Lily scrolled through the page.

The organizer’s identity was hidden.

A new message appeared beneath the fundraiser.

THE BILLIONAIRE IS USING HER.

DO NOT LET HIM BUY HER SILENCE.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

It showed Lily entering Nathaniel’s SUV outside the hotel.

The caption accused her of accepting a secret payoff.

Lily handed the phone back.

“Someone is trying to turn us against each other.”

Nathaniel looked toward the Grand Bellmore.

May you like

“Yes.”

“And I think I know who.”
