CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH BURIED FOR FORTY YEARS

Arthur arrived at the old apartment building just before sunset.
The building was forgotten.
Broken windows.
Cracked walls.
A place where memories had been left behind.
He walked up the stairs slowly.
Every step felt heavier.
When he reached the apartment door, it was already open.
Inside, Elias was waiting.
The old man looked different now.
Not like a stranger.
Like someone carrying the same pain Arthur had carried his entire life.
Neither man spoke for several seconds.
Then Elias placed the old photograph on the table.
Arthur looked at it.
His face changed.
"Where did you get this?" Arthur asked.
Elias looked directly into his eyes.
"Your father gave it to me."
Arthur froze.
"My father died when I was six."
Elias lowered his head.
"No, Arthur."
A long silence filled the room.
"Your father disappeared because he was trying to protect you."
Arthur felt his chest tighten.
For years, he believed his father abandoned him.
He believed he wasn't important enough to stay.
But Elias revealed the truth.
Forty years earlier, Arthur's father Daniel had uncovered corruption inside his own company.
Powerful people wanted him silent.
When danger came, Daniel sent Arthur away with another family to keep him safe.
But before he disappeared, he gave Elias the photograph.
His older brother.
The only person he trusted.
The plan was simple.
Protect Arthur.
Return when it was safe.
But Daniel never came back.
Elias spent decades searching.
But the world convinced him that Arthur was gone forever.
Until one freezing afternoon…
A wealthy stranger placed a jacket over his shoulders.
The same jacket that carried the photograph.
The same photograph that brought them together.
Arthur's eyes filled with emotion.
"You knew my father?"
Elias nodded.
"I didn't just know him."
He paused.
"I was his brother."
The room became completely silent.
Arthur looked at the old man in disbelief.

The stranger he helped on the street wasn't a random person.
He was family.
