THE SLICE SHE SAVED FOR HIM / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - What My Father Said

The special board meeting took place eleven days after the ballroom.

My father joined by video from home.

He was recovering, but slowly.

The medical team had adjusted his treatment.

Investigators now had results from the recovered medication and were comparing them with his hospital testing.

I wanted certainty faster than laboratories and courts could produce it.

Wanting didn’t change the work.

Martin attended with his own lawyer.

He looked offended.

That was apparently his strategy.

He spoke about procedure.

Institutional stability.

The dangers of allowing family conflict to contaminate charitable work.

Then he looked at me.

“Ms. Ashford has a personal motive to redirect blame.”

I kept my face still.

Outside counsel asked him to explain the false inspection report.

“I relied on materials supplied to me.”

“By whom?”

“Evelyn’s office.”

Paige spoke before I could.

“No.”

Martin turned.

She placed a printed email on the table.

“You sent me the packet yourself. You said Evelyn had reviewed it and asked you to handle the release.”

“That doesn’t establish—”

“The attachment history does,” she said.

Outside counsel held up a hand.

The records would be reviewed independently.

Nobody was there to improvise a verdict.

Then Martin turned toward the screen.

“Jonathan, you remember telling me Evelyn supported the grant.”

My father adjusted himself in his chair.

“I remember you telling me she supported it.”

Martin’s jaw tightened.

“You signed the authorization.”

“Yes,” my father said. “I did.”

The room went quiet.

“I signed documents I should have read. I accepted explanations I should have questioned. And when my daughter questioned them, I let you and Celeste convince me that her concern was selfishness.”

“Jonathan—”

“You asked whether I remember. I do.”

His voice strengthened.

“I remember Evelyn trying to protect this foundation. I remember telling her to stop making trouble.”

He looked at me through the screen.

“She wasn’t making trouble. She was noticing it.”

For the first time in months, my father defended me without leaving himself an escape.

The board voted to retain independent investigators, remove Martin from all foundation work, and refer the relevant records to law enforcement.

When the meeting ended, Richard touched my elbow.

“There’s another development.”

May you like

Daniel was cooperating.

And he had kept messages Celeste thought he had deleted.
