Chapter 7 - Blood and Ledgers

Arthur recovered his footing quickly, a greasy, desperate smile spreading across his thin lips. He gestured to the three hired men, who lowered their tools but shifted into aggressive stances, blocking the server door.
"You really are relentless, Eleanor," Arthur said, smoothing the lapels of his wool coat. "I thought you were resting comfortably in your private estate, pretending the world hadn't passed you by. What are you doing down here in the mud with the hired help?"
"Saving my company from a thief," Eleanor replied. "You took six million dollars out of the New England supply chain last quarter alone. You routed the shell payments through a logistics outfit in Delaware registered under Bradley's middle name. Did you really think our forensic accountants wouldn't catch the discrepancy once the audit began?"
Arthur’s smile twitched, turning ugly. "Bradley is an idiot who couldn't manage a lemonade stand. But you? You're an old woman clinging to an obsolete business model. Supermarkets aren't community centers anymore, Eleanor! They're real estate holdings and automated delivery vectors! I was modernizing us! I was preparing to take the brand private!"
"By starving the stores?" Emma spoke up, unable to contain the fury boiling inside her. "By cutting the janitors' healthcare? By firing cashiers for spending six dollars to help a starving customer?"
Arthur turned his cold, dismissive eyes toward Emma, sneering with pure aristocratic disgust. "And who is this stray? Did you hire a babysitter from the checkout line, Eleanor? Shut your mouth, little girl. You make minimum wage; your opinion has no market value."
"Her name is Emma Carter," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a deadly chill. "And she possesses more character, intelligence, and dignity in her little finger than your entire bloodline."
"Enough of this nonsense," Arthur barked, his face darkening. He pointed a finger at the server door. "Break that lock! Now! Take the hammer to the main racks!"
"Stand down!" Marcus roared, drawing his weapon and stepping in front of Eleanor. The two Vance security officers drew their batons, moving into defensive formation.
"You think three guards are going to stop me from protecting my life's work?" Arthur yelled, pulling a heavy steel pry-bar from the toolbox beside him. "Get them out of my way!"
The lead heavy lunged forward, swinging a heavy pipe wrench at Marcus. Marcus sidestepped with fluid precision, catching the man’s wrist, twisting the arm until the bone popped, and slamming his forehead down onto the concrete floor.
The other two men charged.
In the chaotic narrow corridor, steel clattered against concrete. Shouts, grunts, and the sound of shattering glass echoed through the basement. One of Arthur's heavies broke past the guards, lunging straight toward the electrical panel on the wall beside the server door, pulling a red flare from his pocket.
"If I can't wipe it, I’ll burn it!" the man yelled, striking the flare against the wall. A brilliant, hissing red flame erupted, spewing thick chemical smoke into the enclosed hallway.
"The sprinkler system!" Sarah shouted from the back. "If the halon gas triggers, the entire server room suffocates!"
The man threw the burning flare directly toward the open ventilation shaft of the data center.
"No!" Emma screamed.
Without thinking, she dove across the slick concrete floor, ignoring the skin ripping from her knees. She caught the flare in mid-air, the searing heat blistering through the palm of her work glove, and slammed it down into an open metal five-gallon mop bucket filled with dirty gray wash-water.
HISSSSS.
A violent plume of steam erupted, and the flare died in a burst of black soot.
Arthur stared at Emma in stunned fury. "You little bitch!"
He raised the steel pry-bar, his eyes wild with desperate rage, and took two lunging steps straight toward Emma as she scrambled on the floor.
"Arthur! Don't!" Eleanor screamed.
Before Arthur could swing, the heavy fire door behind him exploded open with a deafening bang.
"POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"

Four Boston police tactical officers, weapons raised and flashlights blinding, swarmed the corridor.
Arthur froze. The heavy pry-bar slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete floor. Slowly, his hands went into the air.
