CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL WITH THE GOLD NECKLACE

The mall was crowded that afternoon.

Families walked between stores.

Children laughed near the fountain.

Shoppers carried bags filled with things they didn’t really need.

But in the middle of all that noise, one teenage girl was struggling just to move forward.

Her name was Emily Carter.

At sixteen years old, Emily had learned how to live with challenges most people never understood.

After an accident two years earlier, she depended on crutches every day.

She hated the way people looked at her.

Not with kindness.

With pity.

As she carefully walked across the marble floor, she held several shopping bags in one hand and balanced herself with the other.

Then it happened.

One of her crutches slipped.

Her body lost balance.

And within seconds, she crashed onto the cold floor.

The sound echoed through the mall.

Her bags flew everywhere.

A dress fell out.

A small notebook slid across the floor.

People stopped.

They stared.

But nobody moved.

Then a woman standing nearby sighed loudly.

She looked at Emily like she had caused an inconvenience.

“Seriously?” the woman said.

Emily looked up, embarrassed.

The woman crossed her arms.

“Watch where you’re crawling. Some of us are trying to walk.”

The words hurt more than the fall.

Emily lowered her eyes and tried to collect her things.

Her hands were shaking.

She was used to people judging her.

Used to being seen as weak.

Then suddenly…

A pair of boots stopped beside her.

A man dropped to his knees.

“Hey,” he said gently.

Emily looked up.

The stranger had dark hair, a short beard, and wore a black leather jacket.

He looked intimidating.

But his eyes were kind.

“Don’t move too fast,” he said. “You’re going to hurt yourself.”

He carefully picked up her bags.

“Thank you,” Emily whispered.

The man smiled slightly.

“No problem.”

As he grabbed the last item from the floor, something caught his attention.

A small gold necklace.

He froze.

Emily noticed.

“That’s mine,” she said quickly.

The man didn’t answer.

His fingers tightened around the pendant.

Slowly, he opened it.

Inside was an old photograph.

A little girl.

A young boy.

Two children smiling together.

The man’s face changed.

The confidence disappeared.

The color drained from his face.

“No…”

Emily looked confused.

“What?”

The man stared at the picture.

His voice became barely a whisper.

“Where did you get this?”

Emily touched the necklace.

“My mom gave it to me before she died.”

The stranger looked at her.

His eyes filled with disbelief.

“What was your mother’s name?”

Emily hesitated.

“Sarah.”

The man stopped breathing.

Because that was impossible.

Sarah was the name of the woman he had spent twenty years trying to find.

The woman who disappeared with his baby sister.

The woman who left him with only one memory…

A little girl wearing a gold necklace.

The man slowly stood.

His hands trembled.

Then he rolled up his sleeve.

A faded tattoo appeared on his arm.

Four simple letters.

DANY.

Emily stared.

Her heart started racing.

She had seen that tattoo before.

Not on him.

In an old family photo.

Her lips opened slowly.

“Daniel?”

The man looked at her.

For the first time in twenty years…

He heard the voice of his little sister.

And he whispered:

“Emily…”

The mall suddenly felt silent.

May you like

Because the stranger who helped her stand…

Was the brother she had lost before she could even remember him.
