THE SIGNATURE THEY STOLE / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Box They Needed —

Mara had returned the binder eleven months earlier. A courier had given her a receipt. She had kept it because the settlement payment had been late and she’d needed proof that she had done what they asked.

Ortiz checked the storage company. The account existed. So did a carton bearing the number on Mara’s receipt. Through company counsel, authorized records were preserved while investigators sought the necessary access to the clinic materials.

Then the storage manager disclosed a pending destruction request.

Victor had submitted it that morning.

“Can you stop it?” I asked.

“The material is on hold,” Ortiz said. “No one is putting anything in a shredder.”

The wait was harder than I expected. It took days to collect records, compare dates, and separate genuine expenses from invented ones. I went to another prenatal appointment. I ate toast. I stopped answering unfamiliar numbers.

Dorian asked whether he could come to the appointment.

“Not this one,” I said.

“Okay.”

No wounded silence. No expensive flowers to make refusing him harder.

Later, I sent him a photograph of the ultrasound because I wanted to.

His reply was simple. Thank you for sharing this with me.

A week after the morning in the law office, Ortiz called us in. Investigators had obtained the binder and supporting digital records. Entries matched diverted grants. Handwritten corrections lined up with deposits and invoices. Adrian’s clinic had billed for consultations that had never happened, including mine.

“And the prescription?” I asked.

“We’ve found no dispensing record supporting it. The pharmacy listed in the chart says it never filled that order.”

The pregnancy was real. The treatment history was an invention built around a possibility Adrian had learned after Dorian mentioned our last night together during a private conversation.

My child had never been their creation.

Only their opportunity.

Ortiz turned to another page. “The records also show who requested the false mental-health letter.”

I looked at Dorian. He met my eyes and waited.
