Chapter 15 - A PLACE AT THE TABLE

Spring arrived slowly.

The snow melted off the cliffs.

The pines lost their white weight.

Sunlight reached room 4B every morning because someone opened the curtains.

Mrs. Gable never returned.

The investigation uncovered false invoices, missing care funds, and records altered to hide the neglect.

Months later, she pleaded guilty to charges tied to the theft and falsified records.

The abuse and neglect findings became part of the court record.

Nora gave her statement without looking away.

She didn’t ask to watch Mrs. Gable suffer.

She wanted the truth somewhere it couldn’t be wiped clean with a fresh quilt and a silver tray.

Lorenzo cooperated with the investigation.

He also stopped treating his own absence like a private regret.

He visited.

He listened.

He learned how to help his father without making every moment about his guilt.

Giovanni did not suddenly walk.

His speech did not return in a dramatic rush.

Some days, communication exhausted him.

Some days, he wanted quiet.

On those days, people finally respected the difference between quiet and abandonment.

Nora moved into a small apartment she chose herself.

The estate paid the wages she was owed, including the extra hours the review had uncovered.

Lorenzo offered more.

She accepted help finding childcare.

She declined a house.

“I need something that feels like mine,” she told him.

He nodded.

Then he asked which moving day worked for her.

Brody’s contact remained inconsistent.

Nora kept firm boundaries and handled arrangements concerning Lily through a family-law attorney.

She no longer confused answering him with owing him another chance.

One Sunday, she brought Lily to lunch at the estate.

Giovanni sat at the head of the table.

His nurse was nearby.

Lorenzo stood when Nora entered.

There was a place set beside Giovanni’s chair.

Nora hesitated.

For so long, she had entered that room carrying things for other people.

A tray.

A bucket.

An apology.

Lorenzo pulled out her chair.

“You’re a guest.”

Nora settled Lily into the bassinet beside her.

“Then somebody else can wash the dishes.”

He smiled.

“That was the plan.”

Lunch was ordinary.

That was what made it feel impossible.

Warm food.

An open window.

No one afraid to ask for water.

Afterward, Giovanni looked toward his letter board.

Nora waited as he chose each letter.

Lily woke and made a small, offended noise.

“Your audience is getting impatient,” Nora told him.

His eyes softened.

The nurse read his message.

“Thank you for seeing me.”

Nora reached across the table and took his hand.

“You were right there.”

A tear gathered beneath his eye.

She wiped it away, just as she had that first winter evening.

Across the table, Lorenzo turned off his phone.

May you like

Lily wrapped her tiny fingers around Nora’s thumb.

And when the clock struck the hour, nobody got up to leave Giovanni alone.
