Chapter 1: The Nine Nobody Wanted

Chapter 1: The Nine Nobody Wanted

The train disappeared into the distance, leaving behind a cloud of black smoke and a silence that felt heavier than any storm.

For the first time in years, Emmett Barlow’s ranch had voices inside it.

Nine pairs of frightened eyes stared at the old farmhouse as the wagon stopped in front of the porch.

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to say.

Emmett stepped down from the wagon and looked at the children standing together.

“Alright,” he said quietly. “I suppose we should start by saying something important.”

The children waited.

“This is your home now.”

The words shocked them more than anything else.

Because they had heard promises before.

Promises from strangers.

Promises that disappeared the moment things became difficult.

Tobias tightened his jaw.

“Until you change your mind?”

Emmett looked at him.

“Why would I do that?”

The boy looked away.

“Because everyone else did.”

Those words hit harder than Emmett expected.

He looked at the nine children standing in front of him.

And for the first time since losing his wife, he felt something inside the empty ranch begin to change.

But that night, when the children went to sleep...

Emmett discovered something.

They weren't afraid of the ranch.

They were afraid of being loved.
