Chapter 1 - THE GIRL AT THE PIANO

The wedding stopped because a three-year-old girl touched one piano key.

That was all it took.

One clear note rang through the ballroom of the Hawthorne Estate while nearly four hundred guests waited for billionaire Ethan Cole to marry Victoria Langford.

The pianist had stepped away.

The orchestra was getting ready.

Champagne glasses flashed beneath crystal chandeliers.

And then little Lily Morales climbed onto the bench.

“Lily!”

Rosa’s voice cut across the room.

The child froze with one finger still resting on the ivory key.

Rosa rushed toward her, pale with panic.

She wore the gray uniform of the estate staff.

To everyone else in the room, she was just another maid trying to keep her kid out of trouble.

But Ethan knew Rosa.

The second he saw her face, the blood seemed to drain from his body.

“Rosa?”

She stopped.

Three years had passed since he had heard her name spoken aloud.

Three years since she had disappeared.

Three years since his father told him Rosa had taken money and left him without saying goodbye.

Victoria stepped beside Ethan.

“You know her?”

Rosa immediately lowered her eyes.

“I’m sorry, sir.”

Sir.

The word hit Ethan harder than it should have.

He took one step closer.

“You used to call me Ethan.”

Rosa looked toward Lily.

“Things change.”

Lily stared up at him.

Ethan stared back.

Something about the child’s face bothered him.

Not in a bad way.

In a familiar way.

The shape of her mouth.

The little crease between her eyebrows when she was nervous.

Then Lily tilted her head.

Ethan’s heart stumbled.

His mother used to make that exact expression.

Victoria noticed him staring.

“Ethan?”

He ignored her.

Instead, he asked Rosa the question that turned the ballroom cold.

“How old is she?”

Rosa’s hand tightened around Lily’s shoulder.

“Ethan, please.”

“How old?”

Her lips parted.

For one second, she looked like she might run.

Then she whispered, “Three.”

Ethan’s face changed.

Rosa closed her eyes.

“She turned three in August.”

Three years.

August.

The last night he had spent with Rosa.

The morning his father sent him to London.

The unanswered messages.

The letter that never came.

Ethan looked down at Lily again.

This time, he saw more than resemblance.

He saw possibility.

“Rosa.”

His voice broke.

Victoria slowly lowered her bouquet.

Ethan asked, “Is she mine?”

No one in the ballroom moved.

Rosa’s eyes filled.

Lily looked from one adult to another.

Then, softly, innocently, she asked—

“Mommy, is that my daddy?”
