THE NIGHT I CAME HOME EARLY / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Truck at the Gate

I left the children with my sister, Elena, who had arrived that afternoon after one phone call.

She looked at my face.

“Go. They’re with me.”

I found the truck half full.

Our dining chairs were stacked beside a cabinet. Boxes sat near the gate.

A man carried out the little desk where Sofia used to draw.

“Put that down.”

He stopped.

Another man stepped off the truck.

“We were hired.”

“By who?”

He showed me a message.

Marco’s number.

The instructions said the owners were moving overseas and the contents had been sold.

I photographed the message with the man’s permission.

“My children live here. There’s a dispute over these items. Stop loading.”

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

“They’re just things.”

“Then why do you need to sell them before anybody can stop you?”

Cora waited beside the gate with two neighbors.

One of them had already called for local assistance because the argument had drawn people outside.

I kept my hands at my sides.

I wasn’t going to give Vanessa a scene she could use.

The movers began setting things down.

They looked more angry at whoever had sent them than at me.

Inside, I found drawers open.

Family photographs had been removed from the wall.

The pale rectangles they left behind looked like missing teeth.

I went upstairs.

Sofia’s bed was stripped.

Caleb’s pillow lay on the floor beside an empty plastic box.

I remembered him choosing that pillow on a video call. Blue stars. He had held it up to the screen and asked if I could see.

Vanessa followed me.

“You’re making strangers stare at us.”

I picked up the pillow.

“Where are their school papers?”

“I don’t know.”

“Their birth certificates?”

“In a folder.”

“Which folder?”

She looked away.

I opened the bedroom cabinet.

The space where we kept important documents was empty.

“Vanessa.”

“Marco was organizing the sale.”

“He took their documents?”

“He took the whole folder. I didn’t know.”

Downstairs, someone called my name.

A sealed packet had fallen behind the cabinet while the movers shifted it.

Inside were more copies of the property papers.

And a printed receipt from a shop that handled scanning and document services.

At the top was a date from three months earlier.

The same day Vanessa had told me Sofia needed money for a school trip.
