Chapter 9 - The Marriage He Edited

We met Claire at Elena’s office.

She arrived without makeup, carrying a leather folder I recognized from my own product line.

Nobody offered her coffee.

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know about all of it.”

“Start with what you did know.”

She opened the folder.

Bank statements.

Copies of invoices.

A printed schedule.

Leo had titled it TRANSITION.

My travel dates appeared in the left column.

Board meetings in the middle.

Press events on the right.

Beside the week of my return, he had written: PERSONAL DISCLOSURE IF NECESSARY.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

Claire rubbed her hands together.

“He was collecting clips.”

“Of what?”

“You crying. Arguing. Getting angry after work.”

I remembered nights when he held his phone at chest height.

I thought he was reading messages.

“He said you needed help,” Claire continued.

I stared at her.

“And you thought sleeping with him would provide it?”

She flinched.

“No.”

“Then stop making it sound kind.”

Elena asked where the files were stored.

Claire gave her an account name and explained which records she could lawfully provide through counsel.

“He wanted leverage,” she said.

“For the shares?”

“For everything.”

She slid another page across the desk.

A draft statement.

Mia is taking a temporary leave to focus on her health.

Leo would become acting chief executive.

Victor would oversee the transition.

I read the director’s name twice.

“Victor knew?”

“He introduced Harbor Crest.”

“Who owns it?”

Claire hesitated.

Elena leaned forward.

“If you’re cooperating, cooperate.”

“Victor’s brother. And an offshore entity Leo has an interest in.”

The room went quiet.

This had never been a plan to help me expand.

It was a plan to buy control with money borrowed against what I had already built.

“And the photographs?” I asked.

“Some were cropped.”

“Some?”

“The child was a worker’s daughter. She was waiting after school. There’s a full picture.”

I remembered her.

Ana.

She used to do homework at my mother’s cutting table.

Claire pushed a memory drive toward Elena.

“Copies of the archive.”

Then she looked at me.

“He told me you knew about us.”

I laughed once.

It hurt my throat.

“Did he tell you I knew you were wearing my robe?”

She looked down.

Finally, Elena asked, “What happens next?”

Claire’s mouth tightened.

“The gala.”

May you like

My company’s anniversary celebration was three days away.

“He’s going to do it there.”
