Chapter 14 - BENEATH THE ALTAR

Daniel helped me move the altar platform.
Underneath was an old stone panel.
A narrow brass slot sat near one edge.
The key fit perfectly.
The panel opened.
Inside was a sealed metal case.
My father’s initials were carved into the lid.
I sat on the chapel floor and opened it.
More records.
A flash drive.
And a handwritten letter.
Olivia,
If you find this, I’m sorry I wasn’t there to explain any of it myself.
My vision blurred.
I kept reading.
My father wrote that he had discovered Richard Mercer’s network years earlier.
He also admitted something painful.
At first, he had participated in investments connected to Richard.
He hadn’t understood the crimes behind them.
When he discovered the truth, he tried to leave.
Richard threatened him.
Then threatened me.
My father hid the evidence at Ashborne House because the property was controlled through a holding company Richard didn’t understand.
The same structure that later made the hotel mine.
My father ended the letter with:
Never let anyone convince you silence is obedience.
Sometimes silence is simply the moment before you choose.
I cried then.
Not the controlled tears I had fought for two days.
I sobbed.
For my father.
For the girl I had been.
For the woman who nearly married Gavin.
For every time I had mistaken endurance for love.
Miriam sat beside me.
Neither of us spoke for a long time.
The flash drive contained everything investigators needed.
Bank records.
Audio recordings.
Names.
Payments.
Richard Mercer’s entire network.
Within weeks, prosecutors filed charges connected to fraud, conspiracy, kidnapping, and my father’s death.
Gavin accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.
Tessa did the same.
Andrew resigned from Hart Capital and faced his own sentence.
Victoria sold her home and disappeared from public life.
I didn’t contact her.
MercerArc survived.
Barely.
We sold the Capri villa.
Recovered offshore funds.
Closed fraudulent entities.
Paid employees.
Restored lenders.
Months passed.
One winter afternoon, Daniel found me in the screening room where everything had started.
“You haven’t been in here since that night.”
“I know.”
The wall screens were dark.
He handed me a small box.
“This arrived.”
No return address.
Inside was my engagement ring.
Gavin had kept it after I left it on the chapel altar.
There was a note.
You were right.
I loved what you gave me.
I wish I had learned to love who you were.
I stared at it.
Then I walked to the window.
“Daniel?”
“Yes?”
“Get rid of it.”
“The ring?”
“All of it.”
He smiled.
“Yes, Ms. Hart.”
I thought the story was over.
Then Miriam called.
“Olivia.”
“What happened?”
Her voice sounded strange.
“We finished reviewing your father’s personal trust.”
“And?”
“There’s another beneficiary.”
I frowned.
“Who?”
Miriam hesitated.
May you like
“Someone your father never told you about.”
And when she said the name, I nearly dropped the phone.
