Chapter 12 - THE MAN AT THE SERVICE DOOR

Noah slept better that night.
Daniel didn’t.
He sat beside the window and watched the hallway through a gap in the curtains.
At 2:13 a.m., his phone lit up.
VICTOR.
He let it ring.
A message followed.
You have no idea what she was involved in.
Daniel typed back.
Then tell the police.
The answer came immediately.
You think they won’t look at your signatures too?
Daniel stared at the screen.
Years of board approvals.
Reports he had skimmed.
Authority he had handed over because grief made every decision feel impossible.
Rachel had warned him there could be consequences beyond Victor.
He sent her the messages.
Her reply was brief.
Preserve everything. Don’t engage.
At six, a nurse Daniel didn’t recognize came for Noah.
“Your mother’s being moved for a scan. We’ll take you to the family lounge.”
Daniel stood.
“What scan?”
The woman glanced at him.
“Routine imaging.”
“Her nurse said after nine.”
“The schedule changed.”
Noah slipped off the chair.
Daniel caught his shoulder.
“What’s your name?”
She touched her badge.
He couldn’t read it.
“Let me call the desk.”
The woman backed toward the door.
“I’ll check.”
She left too quickly.
Daniel stepped into the hall.
“Security!”
At the far end, the woman broke into a run.
Martin, returning with coffee, saw Daniel pointing.
He dropped both cups and moved toward the service exit.
The woman shoved through the stairwell door before he reached her.
Security found the borrowed scrub top on the landing.
A camera caught her entering a gray van outside the service entrance.
Noah stood in the doorway, shaking.
“She knew my name.”
Daniel knelt in front of him.
“I know.”
“She said Mom asked for me.”
“I know.”
Noah’s breath came in sharp little pulls.
Daniel kept his voice low.
“Look at me. You’re here. She didn’t take you.”
Ruiz arrived within twenty minutes.
The van belonged to Harbor Recovery Services.
The same company that had held Caroline eleven years earlier.
The same company Victor’s foundation was still paying.
By noon, the hospital had moved Caroline to a restricted room.
Rachel called Daniel into the hallway.
“We have a bigger problem.”
He waited.
“Victor filed an emergency request to freeze the foundation’s records.”
“On what grounds?”
“He says you’re destroying evidence.”
Daniel looked through the glass at his wife and son.
May you like
Victor was no longer trying to keep the truth hidden.
He was trying to make sure Daniel went down with it.
