Chapter 3 – The Debt No Money Could Repay

Someone tore the soaked cloth away.
Paramedics surrounded Elliot immediately.
"Oxygen!"
"Pulse is weak!"
"Move!"
I tried to stand.
My legs refused.
Burns covered both arms.
Blisters had already formed across my neck.
My lungs felt as though they had swallowed the fire itself.
Then I heard footsteps.
Fast.
Unsteady.
Preston Blackwood.
He fell to his knees beside the stretcher before the paramedics even stopped moving.
"Elliot!"
The little boy slowly opened his eyes.
"Daddy..."
One word.
Barely a whisper.
But it was enough.
Preston buried his face against his son's forehead.
The billionaire everyone feared...
Sobbed like an ordinary father.
He looked toward me.
For several seconds...
Neither of us spoke.
Finally he walked over.
Then...
To the astonishment of everyone watching...
He knelt.
Not beside his son.
Beside me.
"Why?"
His voice broke.
"You didn't even know us."
I smiled through cracked lips.
"I knew him."
I nodded toward Elliot.
"I know what it's like for a child to need their mother."
Silence spread across the driveway.
The guests who had stood frozen only minutes earlier lowered their eyes.
Every expensive watch.
Every diamond necklace.
Every tailored suit.
None of it had entered that burning house.
The poorest woman at the party had been the richest in courage.
The next morning, every newspaper carried the same photograph.
Not the mansion.
Not the fire.
Not the billionaire.
A kitchen worker with soot covering her face...
Holding a little boy wrapped inside a wet tablecloth.
America called her a hero.
May you like
She simply called herself...
A mother.
