Chapter 8 - Arthur’s Last Eight Years

The smell reached them first.
Fuel.
Not gasoline.
Something heavier.
Industrial solvent.
Daniel ran toward the office window.
Liquid was spilling across the lower floor from old processing pipes.
Victor had turned the entire mill into an ignition chamber.
“We have four minutes.”
Graham grabbed Victor by the collar.
“How do we stop it?”
Victor laughed.
“You don’t.”
Graham hit him.
“Code.”
Victor spat blood.
“No.”
Richard pressed one hand against his bleeding shoulder.
“Then we leave.”
Daniel looked toward the stairwell.
“Main exit is too far.”
Graham shook his head.
“North loading bay.”
Victor smiled.
“Locked.”
Clara stared at him.
“You built this place around escape routes.”
Victor looked at her.
That told her everything.
Men like Victor always planned an escape for themselves.
She scanned the office.
Desk.
Cabinet.
Gurney.
Computer.
A map.
She moved toward it.
Victor’s eyes followed.
There.
A floor plan.
She ripped it from the wall.
“Clara.”
Daniel joined her.
She pointed.
“Utility tunnel.”
Graham looked.
Victor stopped smiling.
“Where does it go?”
Clara traced the line.
“To the river.”
Daniel nodded.
“Move.”
They dragged Victor with them.
Richard was fading.
Leo saw it.
“Grandpa.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re bleeding.”
Richard managed a weak smile.
“Still annoying, though.”
Leo almost laughed.
Almost.
They reached the lower level.
The solvent spread across the concrete.
Two minutes forty seconds.
Graham led them behind an old boiler.
A steel hatch sat in the floor.
Locked.
Victor laughed.
Graham pointed the gun at his knee.
“Key.”
Victor stared at him.
“You won’t.”
Graham fired into the floor.
The sound stunned everyone.
Victor’s expression finally changed.
He reached inside his coat.
A key.
Graham snatched it.
The hatch opened.
Darkness below.
Daniel went first.
Clara lowered Leo.
Richard followed.
Graham forced Victor down.
Then climbed after him.
They shut the hatch.
Thirty seconds later, the mill exploded.
The tunnel shook violently.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Leo screamed.
Clara wrapped both arms around him.
Behind them, metal screamed.
Fire roared overhead.
Then silence.
They kept moving.
The tunnel ended near the riverbank.
Cold air hit them.
Clara climbed out.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Daniel looked at Graham.
“You called anyone?”
“No.”
Richard sank against a tree.
Leo ran toward him as best he could.
“Grandpa.”
Clara knelt.
The bullet had passed through his shoulder.
Painful.
Bloody.
But not immediately fatal.
Daniel removed his belt.
“Pressure.”
Clara pressed cloth against the wound.
Victor sat nearby under Graham’s gun.
He looked strangely relaxed.
Leo noticed.
“Why are you smiling?”
Victor looked at him.
“Because you still think this ends with me.”
Clara stared.
“What does that mean?”
Victor looked toward Richard.
“Tell them.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Tell them what?”
Victor laughed.
“The final thing Arthur discovered.”
Richard said nothing.
Leo’s voice changed.
“Grandpa.”
Richard looked at him.
“You promised no more lies.”
Richard’s face collapsed.
He nodded slowly.
“Arthur discovered the trust theft wasn’t just Eleanor and Victor.”
Clara waited.
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Sterling Energy benefited.”
Daniel went still.
“How?”
“The stolen trust money was used to cover company debt.”
Victor smiled.
“There it is.”
Clara stared at Richard.
“You used Leo’s money.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not directly.”
“Stop.”
Clara’s voice sharpened.
“Not directly is how rich people say yes.”
Richard looked ashamed.
“Sterling Energy was close to collapse.”
“When?”
“After the offshore expansion.”
“Arthur found out?”
“Yes.”
“He found that Eleanor had diverted trust assets into shell companies.”
“And instead of exposing her?”
Richard swallowed.
“I let the company keep the capital.”
Leo stared at him.
“You stole from me.”
Richard looked at him.
“Yes.”
No excuse.
No corporate language.
Just yes.
That seemed to hurt Leo more.
Victor leaned back against the tree.
“Arthur wanted to go public.”
“He wanted federal investigators.”
“He wanted Richard removed.”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“And that’s why you tried to stop him.”
“Yes.”
Clara felt disgust.
“But you didn’t order the kidnapping.”
“No.”
Victor laughed.
“You didn’t have to.”
Richard turned toward him.
“Shut up.”
“You created the conditions.”
Victor continued.
“You cornered Arthur.”
“You froze his access.”
“You told security to keep him on the estate.”
“Then Eleanor panicked.”
“Graham followed orders.”
“And I saw opportunity.”
Richard looked destroyed.
Leo spoke.
“So everyone had a piece.”
No one answered.
He looked toward Clara.
“Except you.”
Clara knelt beside him.
“Leo.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“Everybody else wanted money.”
“Power.”
“The company.”
“You just wanted me to eat after seven.”
That broke her.
She pulled him into her arms.
For a moment, all the Sterlings disappeared.
There was only a frightened boy and the woman who had noticed him.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
“Maya.”
He answered.
Her voice was urgent.
“I recovered something else.”
Daniel put her on speaker.
“What?”
“The video archive from Arthur’s phone had a hidden encryption layer.”
Richard looked up.
Maya continued.
“There are more recordings.”
“How many?”
“Forty-seven.”
Leo froze.
Clara looked at him.
“From when?”
Maya answered.
“Several years.”
Daniel stared at Victor.
“You recorded him.”
Victor smiled.
“Sometimes.”
Maya continued.
“But not all of these were recorded by Victor.”
“One file is dated three years ago.”
Richard’s face changed.
“The year Arthur died.”
Victor looked toward her phone.
For the first time, he appeared nervous.
Daniel heard it.
“What’s on the file?”
Maya hesitated.
“Arthur.”
Leo gripped Clara’s sleeve.
“Play it.”
Clara looked at him.
He nodded.
Maya sent the audio.
Daniel opened it.
Arthur’s voice filled the riverbank.
Weak.
Older.
But unmistakable.
“If Leo ever hears this…”
Leo covered his mouth.
“I’m sorry.”
“I kept believing I could get back to you.”
“I was wrong.”
Clara held him.
Arthur continued.
“Victor moved me six times.”
“Graham arranged transport twice.”
Graham looked down.
“I don’t know if Eleanor knows I’m still alive.”
Richard turned toward Victor.
Arthur kept speaking.
“But I learned something worse.”
“The helicopter crash was never meant to kill me.”
Everyone froze.
Victor’s face hardened.
“It was meant to kill the pilot and convince the world I was dead.”
Daniel whispered, “A staged death.”
Arthur continued.
“Victor needed me legally dead so he could force access to trust authentication without anyone searching for me.”
“He failed.”
“But someone else helped him.”
Clara looked toward Richard.
Arthur’s voice changed.
“The person who gave Victor my biometric records…”
A pause.
“Was Eleanor.”
Leo closed his eyes.
Arthur continued.
“But she didn’t know he planned to keep me alive.”
“She thought I was already dead.”
Richard whispered, “My God.”
Then Arthur said,
“Three days ago, Eleanor found out.”
Victor stopped breathing.
Daniel looked at him.
Arthur continued.
“She sent someone.”
“I heard them arguing.”
“She wants me dead before Victor can use me against her.”
Leo’s fingers tightened.
“His last recording.”
Maya said quietly,
“Yes.”
Arthur’s voice returned.
“If this is my last message…”
“Leo, I need you to know one thing.”
“You were never a burden.”
“You were the only part of this family I was proud of.”
Leo broke down.
Clara held him while he sobbed.
Arthur’s final sentence came through static.
“And Clara…”
She looked up.
“If you’re still there…”
“Thank you for seeing him.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Even Victor looked away.
Then Maya said,
“There’s one more thing.”
Daniel looked at the phone.
“What?”
“The file location.”
Clara’s heart tightened.
“Where was it recorded?”
Maya answered.
“Not here.”
“Not Massachusetts.”
“Where?”
“Rhode Island.”
A pause.
“Less than four miles from Sterling Manor.”
Everyone stared at Richard.
Arthur had been alive three years ago.
May you like
And at the end of his captivity…
He had been brought home.
