Chapter 11 - HARRIET’S SON

Harriet’s son, Ben, was twenty-three. Graham Kensington had offered him a job after college. By the time Harriet learned what the job involved, Ben was afraid to quit.
“I helped them change records,” Harriet told investigators. “I thought if I kept my head down, Graham would leave Ben alone.”
She admitted using Mateo’s old credentials. She also admitted she had seen Elena gathering evidence.
“Did you warn Graham about her?” an investigator asked.
Harriet looked down. “Yes.”
Leo had insisted on hearing the recorded interview with Dana. At that answer, he stepped away from the table.
Harriet wiped her eyes. “I didn’t know anyone would die. I swear that.”
The investigators asked about the explosion that killed Elena. Harriet could not give them a complete account. She knew Graham had demanded Elena’s notebook. She knew a driver had gone to meet someone near Elena’s car that day. She could not say who placed anything there or who gave the order.
What she could give them were names, accounts, and a storage unit where Graham kept copied records.
A team searched the unit that evening. Inside were boxes of documents and a laptop. One folder contained photographs taken of Leo’s household over the past six months.
Victoria appeared in several, standing beside Graham.
There was also a draft plan. It described a public engagement between Leo and Victoria, followed by Victoria’s gradual control over household staff and Lily’s schedule. Beside the section about Lily, someone had typed: “Father trusts what he sees at home.”
Leo stopped reading.
He had brought Victoria into Lily’s home. He had watched her smile at his daughter and thought that was enough.
Dana placed a hand on the folder. “We have the documents now. Let’s get Lily somewhere she can feel safe.”

Before Leo could answer, Rafael called from the guesthouse gate.
“Victoria’s here,” he said. “She says she has a message from her father.”
