Chapter 12 - The Voice Everyone Heard

Clara left Noel with Dora and the investigator who arrived at the hotel.
Then she took a taxi to St. Leonard’s.
Traffic stopped two blocks away.
She ran the rest.
By the time she reached the church steps, her ankle was barely holding her.
She fell once.
Got up.
Inside, the organ was playing.
The guests had arrived.
The ceremony had begun.
At the altar, Raphael lifted Evelyn’s hand.
Clara screamed.
“Don’t marry her.”
Now, standing beside him in the aisle, she pressed play.
Evelyn’s voice filled the silence between the pews.
“His father’s Barolo. He’s the only one who’ll drink from it.”
Raphael went still.
The ring slipped from his fingers.
It struck the stone floor with a sound Clara would remember for the rest of her life.
A tiny sound.
In that church, it seemed enormous.
Otto’s voice followed.
“Victor needs the signatures first.”
“He’ll get them in the vestry.”
Someone gasped.
Then the recording reached Noel.
Raphael looked at his bride.
She didn’t look back.
Victor stepped into the aisle.
“That’s edited.”
Clara held the phone tighter.
“So is my limp?”
His face changed.
She faced the guests.
“My father found their records eight years ago. He died that night. I went down a concrete staircase because I tried to get away.”
“Clara,” Raphael said softly.
But she had spent eight years being quiet.
She was finished.
“You called him a thief. You told me nobody would believe me. Then you put my daughter’s picture in an envelope.”
Brennan moved toward a side door.
A plainclothes investigator stepped into his path.
At the rear entrance, two uniformed officers appeared.
Raphael’s attorney hurried toward him.
“We’ve been trying to reach you.”
Raphael touched his empty inside pocket.
“Victor had the phones collected in the vestry.”
“For privacy,” Victor said quickly.
“Mine included,” the attorney said. “You told the church coordinator the cancellation was a family misunderstanding.”
Evelyn turned to Raphael.
“I can explain.”
He looked at her for a long moment.
“Then explain the child.”
She said nothing.
Near the altar, a waiter stood beside a silver tray.
On it sat the Barolo.
His father’s wedding gift.
Raphael stepped toward it.
Victor caught his arm.
Clara saw the movement first.
Then she saw something else.
May you like
Evelyn had slipped through the open vestry door.
And Milo was following her into a room with a second exit.
