Chapter 8 - WHAT BRUNO HAD BURIED

Bruno waited in the greenhouse.

He had chosen the place because there were no family portraits there.

No dead Moretti men staring down from the walls.

Alessandro arrived with Rosa.

The old butler looked at their joined hands.

Neither had noticed they were holding on.

“I should have spoken years ago,” Bruno said.

Alessandro released Rosa slowly.

“About my mother?”

Bruno nodded.

He held a small metal box.

“Your mother gave me this three days before she died. She said if anything happened, I was to take it to the police.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

The answer landed hard.

Bruno’s eyes filled.

“Your father showed me a photograph of my son outside his school.”

Rosa looked down.

The same method.

Different years.

Inside the box were bank records, a handwritten journal, and a photograph of Elena with a split lip.

Alessandro stared at it.

He remembered that week.

His father had said she fell.

He had believed him because children had to believe somebody.

“She was leaving,” Bruno said. “She planned to take you.”

Alessandro picked up the journal.

On the last written page:

He says a Moretti child belongs to the family. I told him my son belongs to himself.

Rosa saw Alessandro’s fingers shake.

She reached for the photograph before he bent it.

He let her take it.

“Route Nine,” he said.

Bruno closed his eyes.

“That was where the car went off the road.”

“Do you know what happened?”

“I know the mechanic disappeared. I know the man who paid him worked for your father.”

“That isn’t proof.”

“No.”

The honesty hurt more than certainty would have.

Alessandro sat on an overturned crate.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then Rosa crouched in front of him.

“You were twelve.”

He looked at her.

“You don’t have to say it,” she said. “I can see you trying to find a way you should have stopped it.”

He pressed his palms against his eyes.

“I’ve spent my whole life trying to be better than him.”

“Then this is where you keep trying.”

Back inside, Maya arranged a meeting with federal investigators.

Alessandro agreed to speak through his own attorney.

No promises.

No immunity assumed.

Just records, names, and the truth.

At midnight, the estate’s outer alarm sounded.

A minute later, the greenhouse burst into flame.

Bruno’s metal box was still on the table inside.
