Chapter 13 - THE PRICE OF TRUTH

The story exploded overnight.
News channels camped outside Ashford Manor.
Reporters shouted questions at the gates.
Adrian Moretti’s past became national news.
Again.
But this time, Adrian did something nobody expected.
He released the ledger to federal investigators.
All of it.
No deals.
No redactions.
No private favors.
Marcus stared at him.
“You understand some of these records implicate your father.”
“Yes.”
“And old Moretti companies.”
“Yes.”
“Possibly you.”
Adrian looked at him.
“I know.”
Emily stood nearby.
“You could lose everything.”
Adrian looked toward her.
“I almost lost everything that mattered before I understood what mattered.”
Federal investigators began arrests.
Judges resigned.
Executives disappeared from offices.
Two senators announced sudden “medical leave.”
Helena and Victor were indicted on conspiracy, attempted murder, kidnapping, bribery, and organized crime charges.
Damien Cross negotiated immunity for information.
Vanessa’s role became public.
For weeks, Adrian lived under cameras.
Then the board of Moretti Holdings called an emergency vote.
They removed him as CEO.
Emily found him alone in the library afterward.
“You okay?”
Adrian stared at the letter.
“I spent twenty years building that company.”
“And?”
“They fired me in twelve minutes.”
Emily sat beside him.
“That has to hurt.”
“It does.”
She waited.
Then Adrian smiled faintly.
“But strangely…”
“I can breathe.”
Emily looked at him.
Adrian laughed.
“I spent my entire life protecting something poisoned from the beginning.”
“My father built the company with fear.”
“Victor tried to inherit it with murder.”
“Helena tried to control it with blackmail.”
He looked around the room.
“Maybe losing it is the first clean thing I’ve ever done.”
Emily smiled.
“That sounds suspiciously healthy.”
“Don’t spread it around.”
She laughed.
Then Adrian reached for her hand.
Emily didn’t pull away.
“Emily.”
“Yes?”
“The wedding.”
Her expression changed.
“Bad topic.”
“I know.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I keep thinking about the moment you walked toward me.”
“I thought you were crazy.”
“I was.”
“Why did you do it?”
Emily considered.
“Because everyone else was watching you drown.”
“And nobody wanted to get their shoes wet.”
Adrian smiled.
Then his face softened.
“You didn’t see the chair.”
“I saw it.”
He looked surprised.
Emily continued.
“I just didn’t think it was the most important thing about you.”
Adrian’s eyes dropped.
“Nobody’s ever said that.”
“That’s because rich people are weird.”
He laughed.
Then silence.
Adrian leaned toward her.
Slowly.
Giving her time to move.
She didn’t.
Their first kiss was quiet.
No crowd.
No cameras.
No expensive flowers.
Just two damaged people in a dark library realizing they were still capable of wanting something good.
Then Noah’s voice came from the doorway.
“Ew.”
They pulled apart.
Emily covered her face.
“Noah!”
He grinned.
Adrian looked at him.
“You saw nothing.”
“I saw everything.”
“Traitor.”
Noah laughed.
Then Marcus appeared behind him.
His expression was serious.
“Adrian.”
Adrian sighed.
“I knew happiness felt suspicious.”
Marcus handed him an envelope.
“No return address.”
Inside was a photograph.
Taken that morning.
Emily and Noah leaving the hospital.

On the back were five words.
Helena wasn’t the last one.
