Chapter 3 — The Man Who Finally Learned To Love

The betrayal inside the Mercer organization ended quickly.

Lawson Mercer was known for his revenge.

But this time, something was different.

For the first time, he did not seek power.

He sought justice.

The person responsible was arrested.

The corrupt doctors were exposed.

The entire network behind the attack on his children collapsed.

But the greatest battle was still inside the hospital room.

Because even after the truth was revealed…

The children were still sick.

One morning, Dr. Yates entered with new results.

Everyone became silent.

Lawson held his breath.

“The treatment is working.”

For a moment, nobody understood.

Then the doctor smiled.

“Their bodies are responding.”

Lawson looked at his children.

Blythe was holding Jonah’s hand.

Both were smiling.

And Lawson Mercer…

The man who had survived wars, betrayals, and countless enemies…

Started crying.

Not because he was weak.

Because he finally allowed himself to feel.

Months later, the Mercer mansion looked completely different.

The curtains stayed open.

The hallways were filled with laughter.

The medical wing became a place of healing instead of fear.

Jonah ran through the garden.

Blythe painted pictures near the windows.

And Lawson…

Lawson was no longer the man everyone feared.

He was simply a father.

One evening, he found Waverly preparing to leave.

“You’re leaving?”

She smiled.

“The children are getting stronger.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Waverly looked at him.

“Lawson…”

“You saved them.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“They saved you.”

He said nothing.

Because she was right.

Waverly Dunn had not just healed two dying children.

She had opened the curtains of a house that had been trapped in darkness.

She had reminded a powerful man that love was stronger than fear.

Before she walked away, Blythe ran toward her.

“Waverly!”

The little girl hugged her tightly.

“You’re family.”

Waverly froze.

Those words were the one thing she never expected to hear again.

Family.

Lawson watched quietly.

Then he stepped forward.

“Stay.”

Waverly looked at him.

“As what?”

Lawson smiled faintly.

“For once…”

“As someone who doesn’t have to save everyone alone.”

Years later, people would still remember Lawson Mercer as one of Chicago’s most powerful men.

But inside the Mercer home, nobody talked about his empire.

They talked about the woman who opened the curtains.

The woman who brought laughter back.

The woman who showed a broken family that even the darkest house could find the light again.

And every morning…

When the sunlight entered the children’s room…

Lawson Mercer remembered the same lesson:

May you like

A man could control an empire.

But only love could save his heart.
