Chapter 13 - WHEN THE STORY TURNED ON ME

By morning, I had become three different women online.

A thief.

A gold digger.

A secret lover who had ruined an engagement.

None of them had my actual life.

None of them had sat on a bus calculating whether seventy-four dollars could cover groceries and a late fee.

Someone found Nora’s workplace.

Her manager called her into the office.

She returned to the hotel smiling too brightly.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Nothing I can’t handle.”

“Nora.”

She sat down.

“They put me on leave until things settle down.”

I felt sick.

“This is my fault.”

“No.”

“You’re losing work because of me.”

“I’m losing work because cowards think a woman with a bruise is easier to punish than the person who gave it to her.”

She took my face carefully between her hands.

“Do not help them blame you.”

The next day, Vanessa’s attorney sent a proposal through mine.

I had a lawyer now.

A legal-aid referral from the victim advocate, not someone on Luca’s payroll.

The proposal offered money.

Enough to pay my debts.

Enough to move.

Enough to stop counting grocery-store change.

In return, I would resolve the civil claims, agree to broad confidentiality, and stop making public statements.

It couldn’t make a criminal case disappear.

But the accompanying language described the assault as a misunderstanding.

A misunderstanding.

I read that word until it stopped looking real.

My attorney, Dana, waited.

“You don’t have to answer today.”

“Would accepting make me a liar?”

“Not automatically.

But you need to understand exactly what you’d be agreeing to.”

I thought about Rosa.

Beth.

Daniel writing down delivery dates because nobody with power wanted to listen.

“Tell them no.”

Dana nodded.

No speech.

No applause.

Just a decision that would make my life harder and let me sleep in it.

That evening, Beth called.

“They found the contractor.”

I stood.

“The one from the camera?”

“Yes.”

“Is he talking?”

“He gave them his phone.”

I pressed the receiver closer.

Beth’s voice cracked.

“There are messages from Enzo telling him Daniel needed to have an accident.”

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

Then Beth added, “And Vanessa knew they were paying him.”

The red dress.

The diamonds.

The explanation delivered before anyone could ask.

I had thought she was covering up stolen money.

She had been protecting something far worse.
