Chapter 11 - The Price of Staying Quiet

Claire didn’t shout.

She walked into the room and stood directly in front of her sister.

“You let me pack his suitcase.”

Vanessa began crying again.

Claire shook her head.

“No.

You don’t get to do that first.”

“He said it was temporary.”

“You said you were going with him.”

“I was going to visit.”

“Visit?”

The word came out almost empty.

Claire looked toward the upstairs hallway.

“He kept asking whether his new room would have a phone.

Do you know why?”

Vanessa said nothing.

“So he could call you and remind you where he was.”

I watched her absorb it.

No argument could make that smaller.

Luca stepped back as Claire passed him.

She went upstairs and closed Noah’s door.

Mara ended the call with Victor’s attorney.

Then she faced Vanessa.

“You need your own lawyer.

Someone who represents you.”

“Will you help Noah?”

“I can help make sure his care is handled properly.

You need to be honest about every document you signed.”

Vanessa nodded.

For the first time, the movement didn’t look like a performance.

Later, I found her standing outside the kitchen while Claire made Noah a sandwich.

He sat at the table swinging his legs.

Sal was repairing the loose strap on his backpack with a tiny sewing kit.

Vanessa watched through the doorway.

“You think I’m a monster,” she said to me.

“I think your son asked if he could be in your pictures.”

She closed her eyes.

“I thought if I got through the wedding, everything would be different.”

“For who?”

She looked at me.

I didn’t soften the question.

That evening, her own attorney arrived.

Vanessa sat with him for nearly two hours.

When she came out, she had removed her makeup and tied back her hair.

She handed Mara her phone.

“There are messages.”

“From your father?”

“From him.

From me.

All of them.”

Then she put a slim folder beside it.

“I brought these from his office Tuesday before I went to Claire’s.

That’s why he knew something was wrong.”

Inside were copies of recent transfers and travel arrangements for Noah.

A second destination appeared beneath the school itinerary.

A private residential program.

No return date.

Vanessa stared at the page.

“He told me it was a school.”

Her attorney moved closer.

“We’ll document where this came from.”

Then Vanessa’s phone lit up.

DAD.

She looked at her attorney.

He nodded for her to answer without making promises.

Victor spoke before she could say hello.

“Bring me the copies tomorrow morning.”

Vanessa looked at Noah through the doorway.

May you like

Her father continued.

“Or I’ll make sure that child knows exactly what his mother chose.”
