Chapter 11 - The River Warehouse

The river warehouse had been abandoned since the Blackwood shipping strike twelve years earlier.

Rust covered the doors.

Rainwater ran through broken windows.

Lily arrived before sunrise.

She wore a tracking device beneath her coat.

Victor’s security chief and six loyal men waited three blocks away.

Thomas had ordered her not to go.

Lily had ignored him.

Ethan was inside.

Victor was inside.

Margaret was inside.

Nothing else mattered.

She approached the entrance alone.

A camera moved above the door.

The steel gate opened.

Dr. Reeves stood inside.

His white medical coat had been replaced by a black suit.

“You came.”

Lily held up the memory chip.

“You wanted this.”

Reeves smiled.

“Elena always trusted sentimental objects.”

“Where is Ethan?”

“Safe.”

“I want to see him.”

“You are in no position to make demands.”

Lily stepped closer.

“Then you do not get the chip.”

Reeves raised one hand.

A light turned on above the warehouse floor.

Victor sat tied to a steel chair.

His face was pale from blood loss.

Margaret was bound nearby.

Ethan lay inside a portable hospital crib.

A monitor tracked his breathing.

Serena stood beside him.

Her hands were tied.

Damon stood on the opposite side of the room.

His face was bruised.

He was also a prisoner.

Lily looked at Reeves.

“You planned all of it.”

“Not all.”

“Serena planned to marry Victor.”

“Damon planned to steal his empire.”

“I simply allowed them to expose every weakness.”

Serena pulled against her restraints.

“You promised to get me out.”

Reeves looked at her.

“I did.”

“You are out of jail.”

Damon laughed bitterly.

“You used us.”

Reeves smiled.

“You were eager to be used.”

Victor lifted his head.

“Elena trusted you.”

“Elena suspected me.”

“That is why she died.”

Damon looked at Reeves.

“You ordered the crash?”

“I corrected your poor planning.”

Damon’s expression changed.

He had believed the murder belonged to him.

Reeves continued.

“The brakes might have failed too late.”

“I arranged a second vehicle.”

Victor’s eyes became cold.

“You watched her die.”

“I watched a threat disappear.”

Lily looked at Ethan.

“What is on the chip?”

“Names.”

“Payments.”

“Children sold through private hospitals.”

“Judges who legalized the adoptions.”

“Doctors who changed birth records.”

“Politicians who protected the network.”

Lily looked at the injured judge’s role differently now.

“This is bigger than Serena.”

“Much bigger.”

Reeves extended his hand.

“The chip.”

“Release Ethan first.”

“No.”

“Then I destroy it.”

Lily held it between two fingers.

Reeves nodded toward a guard.

The man poured gasoline across the floor around Victor.

Margaret cried out.

Lily’s hand trembled.

Reeves smiled.

“You care too much.”

“That is why people like you always lose.”

Lily dropped the chip.

It struck the concrete.

Then she crushed it beneath her shoe.

Reeves’s smile vanished.

Serena stared at her.

Damon swore.

Victor did not react.

Lily looked at Reeves.

“You really believed Elena kept only one copy?”

Reeves raised his gun.

“Where is the other?”

“Every file was uploaded when I opened the pendant.”

Reeves’s eyes shifted toward the camera above the entrance.

Lily continued.

“The police commissioner has it.”

“Federal investigators have it.”

“Every family named in those records has it.”

It was a bluff.

The pendant had contained only one chip.

But Reeves did not know that.

He grabbed Lily by the throat.

“You are lying.”

Victor spoke from the chair.

“She is not.”

Reeves looked at him.

Victor smiled faintly.

“You should have searched her before allowing her inside.”

Reeves tore open Lily’s coat.

The tracking device blinked beneath the fabric.

He ripped it away.

A bullet shattered the warehouse window.

One of Reeves’s guards fell.

Victor’s men opened fire from outside.

Chaos erupted.

Lily ran toward Ethan.

Serena kicked the portable crib toward her.

“Take him.”

Lily caught it before it overturned.

Reeves fired at Victor.

Damon threw himself against Reeves.

The shot struck a metal beam.

Margaret crawled behind a crate.

Lily lifted Ethan from the crib.

His body felt cold.

“Ethan.”

His eyes did not open.

The monitor alarmed.

Reeves saw her holding him.

“He needs the antidote.”

Lily turned.

“What did you give him?”

Reeves backed toward an exit.

“A drug that stops breathing slowly.”

“Where is the antidote?”

He smiled.

“In my pocket.”

Victor broke one hand free from the chair.

“Lily, get down.”

Gunfire tore through the warehouse.

Reeves disappeared behind a row of containers.

Lily followed him.

Victor shouted after her.

She kept moving.

Ethan’s breaths became slower.

Reeves reached the river platform.

A speedboat waited below.

He turned with his weapon raised.

Lily stopped several feet away.

“Give me the antidote.”

“Give me the real chip.”

“It is destroyed.”

“Then the child dies.”

Lily looked at Ethan’s pale face.

She stepped closer.

Reeves pressed the gun against her forehead.

“You were chosen because you were weak.”

Lily stared into his eyes.

“No.”

“I was chosen because Serena knew I would protect him.”

Reeves frowned.

Lily kicked the edge of the platform release.

The metal railing collapsed.

Reeves lost his balance.

His gun fell into the river.

Lily grabbed his coat.

“Antidote.”

He struck her across the face.

She held on.

“Give it to me.”

Reeves reached for her throat.

Then Serena appeared behind him.

She drove a broken piece of wood into his shoulder.

Reeves screamed.

Serena searched his coat.

She found a small vial.

“Take it.”

Lily stared at her.

“Why are you helping me?”

Serena looked toward Ethan.

For one moment, her face held something close to shame.

“Because he reached for you.”

Then Reeves grabbed Serena.

They both fell over the railing.

Lily caught Serena’s wrist.

Serena hung above the dark river.

Reeves disappeared beneath the water.

Serena looked up at Lily.

“You should let me fall.”

Lily held tighter.

“No.”

“After everything?”

“You will answer for everything.”

Victor’s men reached the platform.

They pulled Serena to safety.

Lily ran back toward the warehouse with the antidote.

She injected it under the instructions of a medic.

Ethan did not move.

One second passed.

Then another.

His chest remained still.

Lily began to cry.

“Please.”

“Please breathe.”

Victor reached them.

He placed one hand on Ethan’s chest.

The baby suddenly coughed.

A thin cry escaped his lips.

Lily collapsed against the floor.

Victor closed his eyes.

May you like

But across the warehouse, Damon had vanished.

And so had the crushed pieces of Elena’s memory chip.
