Chapter 5: The Man at the Head of the Table

Vittorio Rossi was gone.

His room had been emptied before the nursery attack. His passport, clothing, and personal documents had disappeared. Security footage showed him leaving through a maintenance tunnel beneath the wine cellar.

He had planned everything.

Sophia’s bombing.

Leo’s poisoning.

The fire.

But he had not planned for Hunter.

Lorenzo mobilized men across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Airports were watched. Marinas were searched. Private pilots were threatened, bribed, or both.

Vittorio had vanished.

Two nights later, Lorenzo received a video.

Hunter stood beside him in the study while the screen flickered to life.

Vittorio sat in a dim room before a concrete wall. He looked calm, almost fatherly.

“My dear nephew,” he began, “you always were too emotional for leadership.”

Lorenzo’s hand tightened around the edge of the desk.

Vittorio continued.

“Your father understood sacrifice. He knew bloodlines must remain strong. You weakened yourself with Sophia. Then you weakened further with the child.”

Hunter watched Lorenzo’s face.

No visible reaction.

Only stillness.

“I gave Halloran one simple task,” Vittorio said. “Allow nature to correct your mistake. But then a servant interfered.”

His eyes turned toward the camera as if he could see Hunter.

“The maid is dangerous, Lorenzo. Not because she has power, but because she has given you something worse.”

Vittorio smiled.

“Hope.”

The video changed.

A man appeared bound to a chair.

Tommy Vance.

Hunter gasped.

His face was bruised, and blood covered his shirt.

Vittorio stepped behind him.

“This little man owes a great deal of money. He also knows how to hurt women. I found him useful.”

Tommy began pleading.

“I didn’t know who she worked for. I swear.”

Hunter moved closer to the screen.

Vittorio held up a folder.

“Inside this file is Hunter Higgins’s medical report, including the evidence she refused to give police. I also have a recording of Tommy confessing to pushing her down the stairs.”

Hunter’s breath stopped.

“You wanted justice,” Vittorio continued. “I will give it to you.”

He placed a gun on the table in front of Tommy.

“Come alone, Hunter. Shoot the man who killed your daughter, and I will release the evidence that guarantees his guilt.”

Lorenzo turned off the screen.

“No.”

Hunter looked at him.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You are not going.”

“He has the confession.”

“We can obtain another.”

“How?”

Lorenzo did not answer.

Tommy had refused to speak to investigators. The witnesses from the apartment building were afraid. Hospital records proved Hunter had fallen, but not who pushed her.

Vittorio possessed the one thing she needed.

“He wants to use me against you,” Hunter said.

“He wants to destroy what Leo trusts.”

“What does that mean?”

“You saved my son. You entered this house with nothing, and within days the staff would die for you.”

“That isn’t true.”

“It is.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“Vittorio understands loyalty. He knows yours cannot be bought. So he intends to break it.”

Hunter looked toward the frozen ocean beyond the windows.

“What if I go wearing a wire?”

“He will search you.”

“You could track me.”

“He will expect that.”

“He may kill Tommy.”

Lorenzo’s voice became hard.

“Tommy Vance is not worth your life.”

“This isn’t about his life.”

“Then what is it about?”

“Lily.”

The name silenced him.

Hunter’s tears came slowly.

“I never protected her. I saw Tommy’s anger getting worse. I knew he was using drugs. I knew he had started following me to work. But I kept thinking I could calm him down.”

“You were afraid.”

“I was her mother.”

“And he was the man who chose violence.”

“I still failed her.”

Lorenzo’s expression shifted.

He understood the language of impossible guilt.

“You think killing Tommy will change that?”

“No.”

“Then why go?”

“Because I need the truth on record. Not buried in one of your secret rooms. Not whispered by criminals. I need Lily’s death to exist in the world.”

Lorenzo stood silent.

Hunter wiped her face.

“You told Leo he wasn’t alone. Prove it.”

He understood her plan before she explained it.

Vittorio expected Hunter to come alone.

He did not expect the whole world to come with her.

Lorenzo contacted a federal prosecutor who had spent ten years trying to indict the Rossi organization. Her name was Evelyn Shaw.

She did not trust Lorenzo.

Lorenzo did not trust her.

But both wanted Vittorio.

Hunter agreed to wear a transmission device hidden beneath a medical dressing over the wound on her shoulder. Federal agents would monitor from a distance. Lorenzo’s men would remain farther back.

“If either side moves before I give the signal,” Hunter said, “Vittorio will know.”

Evelyn looked at her across the table.

“You understand he may kill you before we can intervene.”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo’s jaw clenched.

Evelyn turned toward him.

“And you understand that any evidence we recover may expose your organization as well.”

Lorenzo did not hesitate.

“Yes.”

Hunter looked at him.

For the first time, she realized he had already chosen Leo over his empire.

The meeting place was an abandoned church in Red Hook.

Hunter entered alone at midnight.

Candles burned before a broken altar.

Tommy sat tied to a chair.

Vittorio stood beside him.

“You came,” he said.

Hunter kept her breathing steady.

“You have the confession?”

Vittorio lifted a recorder.

“First, you finish what grief began.”

He handed her the gun.

Hunter looked at Tommy.

He stared at her with the same eyes that had once watched her tumble down the stairs.

“Hunter,” he whispered. “I was drunk.”

She raised the weapon.

Tommy began crying.

“I didn’t mean to kill the baby.”

The words echoed through the church.

Hunter’s finger tightened against the trigger.

Vittorio smiled.

“Yes,” he said. “Let justice speak.”

Hunter looked at the man who had destroyed her child.

Then she slowly lowered the gun.

“No.”

Vittorio’s smile vanished.

Tommy stared at her.

Hunter stepped closer to him.

“You will live,” she said. “You will hear Lily’s name every day in court. You will know she existed. You will know the world remembers what you did.”

She turned toward Vittorio.

“And you don’t get to turn me into you.”

Vittorio’s hand moved beneath his coat.

Hunter shouted the signal.

Gunfire exploded from the balcony.

The candles went out.

Tommy screamed.

Hunter dropped behind a pew as agents stormed the side doors.

Vittorio fired toward the entrance and ran for the altar.

A figure emerged from the darkness behind him.

Lorenzo.

He had ignored the plan.

The two men faced each other beneath the broken cross.

May you like

Vittorio raised his weapon.

Lorenzo fired first.
