Chapter 14 - The First Word After Silence

Dr. Shah looked exhausted.

Evelyn could not speak.

Jace stood beside her.

“The repair was successful.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Jace closed his eyes.

Dr. Shah continued.

“Maisie’s heart is beating on its own.”

Evelyn collapsed against Jace.

For the first time in six years, neither of them pulled away.

Maisie remained unconscious for sixteen hours.

Jace sat beside her bed.

He read every letter Evelyn had written.

He read them aloud so Maisie would hear her mother’s words.

Evelyn slept in the chair beside him.

At dawn, Maisie’s fingers moved.

Jace stopped reading.

Her eyes opened slowly.

She looked toward Evelyn.

“Mommy?”

Evelyn woke instantly.

“I’m here.”

Maisie smiled weakly.

Then she looked at Jace.

He leaned closer.

“You kept the necklace.”

Jace touched the moon and star around his neck.

“I promised.”

Maisie reached toward him.

He placed the pendant in her palm.

She held it against her chest.

“Can I call you Daddy now?”

Jace’s face broke.

He had survived boardrooms, funerals, betrayals, and a river.

That question brought him to his knees.

He took her hand carefully.

“You can call me anything you want.”

Maisie frowned.

“I want Daddy.”

Jace bowed his head against her fingers.

“Then Daddy it is.”

Evelyn looked away as tears ran down her face.

Later that morning, federal prosecutors announced charges against Conrad Mercer.

Attempted murder.

Kidnapping.

Fraud.

Witness intimidation.

Medical conspiracy.

The murder of Eleanor Mercer.

Judge Vale accepted a cooperation agreement.

Dr. Kessler provided records connecting Conrad to every payment.

Madeline testified about the blackout, the forged schedules, and the hospital attack.

Noah survived the vault.

His testimony exposed six years of threats and imprisonment.

The Mercer board removed Conrad permanently.

They offered Jace his position back.

He refused.

Instead, he asked the board to dissolve the private medical transport company and transfer its assets to children denied critical care.

The trust transferred into Maisie’s name on her sixth birthday.

Evelyn was appointed sole independent guardian.

Jace did not challenge her.

That surprised everyone.

Especially Evelyn.

“You could ask for joint custody.”

They stood outside Maisie’s recovery room.

“I could.”

“Why aren’t you?”

“Because I will not become another man who uses paper to take choices from you.”

Evelyn studied him.

“What do you want?”

“A chance.”

“To do what?”

“To earn the place Maisie already gave me.”

Evelyn looked through the glass.

Maisie was drawing three figures beneath a large umbrella.

“I don’t know if I can trust you.”

Jace nodded.

“Then I will give you reasons.”

A nurse entered the hallway carrying a final envelope from Eleanor’s hidden room.

It was addressed to Evelyn.

Evelyn opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Eleanor holding a newborn baby.

The baby was not Jace.

A name was written on the back.

NOAH MERCER.

Evelyn looked toward her brother’s hospital room.

Jace read the name.

The truth struck them both at the same time.

Noah Hale was not only Evelyn’s brother.

May you like

He was Conrad’s first son.

And he had been hidden for thirty-two years.
