Dr. Emily Carter had spent fifteen years saving children’s lives.
She had seen broken bones, severe accidents, and injuries that made even experienced doctors look away.
But nothing prepared her for six-year-old Lily.
When the ambulance doors opened that night, Emily immediately noticed three things.
A fractured arm.
A bruised eye.
And a pair of heavy pink rain boots that the little girl refused to let anyone touch.
Lily was shaking on the trauma bed, tears running down her cheeks as nurses tried to examine her.
“Sweetheart, we need to check your whole body,” Emily said gently.
But Lily pulled her legs closer.
“No…”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Please don’t take them off.”
Emily looked at Greg, Lily’s stepfather.
“I’m sorry, but we need to remove them.”
Greg immediately stepped forward.
“She’s scared. She doesn’t understand.”
But Emily noticed something strange.
Greg wasn’t looking at Lily’s injuries.
He was looking at the boots.
Then Lily grabbed Emily’s sleeve.
“He told me nobody can look inside.”
