Chapter 12 - THE STORY THEY WOULD SELL

The recording began with Victor asking a question.

“What happens when the DNA comes back?”

Graham answered calmly.

“We stop arguing about who she is.

We argue about whether Cameron should have her.”

Cameron listened without moving.

“He hasn’t raised a child in ten years,” Graham continued.

“He’s obsessive.

He’s unstable.

Give the press the hospital incident and the parking-lot photographs.”

Victor asked about the money.

“Call it private care.

Judith becomes the mistake.

We were protecting a medically vulnerable child.”

The recording ended.

Ruth closed the laptop.

“We document your conduct.

We keep Eva’s wishes central.

And we don’t let anger choose your next move.”

Cameron rubbed his face.

“I almost forced my way into that building.”

“But you didn’t.”

He nodded.

That afternoon, a gossip website published a story about a billionaire “claiming custody of a vulnerable teen after a grief episode.”

It included a photograph of Cameron gripping Marcus’s arm in the parking lot.

Eva found it before anyone could warn her.

She brought her tablet to Cameron.

“They’re saying you’re crazy.”

“I’ve been angry.

And scared.

That doesn’t make everything they wrote true.”

“Why don’t you tell them?”

“Because telling the public everything would mean telling them your private life.”

Eva stared at the screen.

She had spent ten years being discussed.

Now strangers were discussing her again.

“I don’t want to be a headline.”

“Then we won’t help them make you one.”

Hale Capital’s board requested Cameron attend an emergency meeting by video.

Graham had proposed temporary leadership changes.

Cameron sent Ruth the invitation.

“Can they remove me?”

“Possibly from daily management.

That doesn’t decide who your daughter is.”

“Then they can wait.”

He stayed for Eva’s appointment with the independent psychologist.

Afterward, she asked him to walk around the grounds.

They talked about her drawing.

About school.

About a teacher she liked.

At the cottage door, she hesitated.

“I remember your voice sometimes.”

He waited.

“When you said my name.

Before.”

He could only nod.

His phone vibrated.

Marcus had recovered the missing attachment to the guardianship filing.

Its first paragraph alleged that Cameron had voluntarily abandoned Lily.

Its witness statement came from Nia Brooks.

And her signature had been copied from an old employment form.
