Chapter 1 - THE BOY AT THE DOOR

The little boy burst into the wedding reception crying.

Not walking.

Not calling for help.

Running.

His shoes slapped against the polished marble as three hundred guests turned toward the sound.

Then he spotted Elena.

The maid holding a silver tray near the ballroom entrance.

His face changed instantly.

“Aunt Elena!”

The tray slipped from Elena’s hands.

Crystal glasses exploded across the floor.

The boy ran straight into her arms.

Elena staggered backward.

Her face went completely white.

“Noah?”

The word escaped her before she could stop it.

Alejandro Moreira heard it.

He had been standing beneath a ten-foot wall of white roses beside his fiancée, Victoria Sinclair, waiting for the orchestra to begin the final song before their wedding vows.

Now he stepped away from the altar.

“You know him?”

Elena looked at Alejandro.

Then at the boy.

Then toward the far end of the ballroom, where Alejandro’s grandmother, Beatriz Moreira, sat beneath a chandelier with a frozen smile.

Elena said nothing.

Noah tightened his arms around her.

“I found you.”

His voice cracked.

“I was scared.”

Elena dropped to her knees.

“What are you doing here?”

“My mom told me to come.”

Elena’s expression changed.

“Your mom?”

Noah nodded.

“She told me if anything happened, I had to find Alejandro Moreira.”

A champagne glass shattered.

Everyone turned.

Beatriz Moreira stood beside her chair.

Her hand was trembling.

“What did that child say?”

Noah looked toward her.

“Alejandro Moreira.”

Beatriz’s lips lost their color.

“That name…”

She swallowed.

“No one outside this family should know that name.”

Alejandro stared at her.

“Grandmother, what are you talking about?”

Victoria stepped forward in her designer wedding gown.

Her smile was tight.

“This is obviously some kind of misunderstanding.”

She looked at security.

“Please remove the child.”

Noah flinched.

Elena immediately pulled him closer.

“No.”

Victoria’s eyes sharpened.

“Elena.”

“I said no.”

The ballroom fell silent again.

Elena had worked in the Moreira estate for nine years.

She had never once raised her voice in front of the family.

Victoria stared at her.

“You’re an employee.”

Elena stood slowly.

“And he is a child.”

Alejandro lifted a hand.

“Enough.”

His voice was quiet.

That made it worse.

Security stopped moving.

Alejandro walked toward Noah.

He crouched in front of him.

“What’s your mother’s name?”

Noah looked at Elena first.

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Noah…”

But the boy answered.

“Isabella.”

Alejandro stopped breathing.

Across the ballroom, Beatriz grabbed the back of her chair.

Alejandro slowly stood.

“What did you say?”

“My mom’s name is Isabella.”

Victoria frowned.

“Who is Isabella?”

Nobody answered.

Alejandro turned toward his grandmother.

Her face told him everything before she spoke.

Isabella was not just a name.

She was a wound.

Alejandro stepped closer to Noah.

“Isabella what?”

Noah reached for his backpack.

“Mom said I shouldn’t tell anyone until I gave you this.”

He pulled out a sealed envelope.

The paper was yellowed at the edges.

The wax seal was cracked.

Written across the front were seven words.

FOR ALEJANDRO, WHEN HE IS ABOUT TO MARRY.

Elena covered her mouth.

A sob escaped her.

Alejandro looked at her.

“You recognize the handwriting.”

Elena could barely speak.

“Yes.”

“Whose is it?”

She stared at the letter.

Then whispered the name that Beatriz had spent sixteen years trying to erase.

“Your sister’s.”

Alejandro’s face went blank.

“My sister died.”

Elena looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“She didn’t.”

May you like

And somewhere behind them, Beatriz Moreira whispered one terrified word.

“Stop.”
