Chapter 15 - WHAT HE KEPT

We met Mrs. Ellis at the house. She had found the envelope behind a loose panel in the linen closet while showing officers where Vanessa had locked me in.

Luca took it to the kitchen table. His mother’s handwriting filled a single page.

She had noticed missing payments from the dock accounts years earlier. She had asked Daniel about them. Daniel said he was helping a supplier through a hard season and would replace the money. She hadn’t believed him, but she had been ill. Before she could speak to Luca, she hid copies of the invoices with the letter.

“Why didn’t she give this to me?” Luca asked.

Mrs. Ellis sat across from him. “She planned to. Then she went into the hospital. After she died, I didn’t know the envelope was here.”

Luca read the last line twice.

YOU MAY LOVE HIM. MAKE HIM TELL YOU THE TRUTH ANYWAY.

The copied invoices went to Detective Brooks. They helped establish when the missing money had begun. Daniel and Vanessa both gave further statements. Paul supplied the records he had kept. The investigation would take months, Brooks warned us. Luca understood.

The wedding was canceled.

Ruth kept the docks running while Luca brought in outside accountants to review every contract. He called the lenders himself and showed them the disputed filing. There were difficult meetings, but the transfer never went through.

A week later, Luca asked to speak with me in the kitchen where I used to wait for my shifts.

“I’m sorry I made it hard for you to come to me,” he said.

“You didn’t twist my hand.”

“No. But I let Vanessa have access to the staff files. And I didn’t notice you were afraid until she spoke for you at dinner.”

I looked at my fingers. The swelling had gone down. I could close my hand again, though slowly.

“I need time off,” I said.

“You have it. Paid.”

“And after that, I don’t want to work in a house.”

“What do you want to do?”

I had thought about it while Noah recovered on my couch. “Mrs. Ellis says Ruth needs help organizing the records at the docks. I’m good at noticing when something’s out of place.”

Luca smiled for the first time in days. “You are.”

Ruth interviewed me. She offered me the job on my own terms. Noah went back to repairing computers and started taking evening classes in accounting, determined to understand every number he had helped uncover.

On my first day at the docks, I put the memory card in a small evidence envelope for Brooks. I thought of the six bowls of soup, the black glove, and the few steps I had been desperate to finish.

I had wanted to survive one shift.

May you like

Instead, I had spoken when staying quiet would have been easier.

Outside Ruth’s office, a ship sounded its horn on the river. My new desk was covered in invoices. I picked up the first one with both hands and got to work.
