Chapter 14 - THE LAST GHOST

Agent Cole traced the motorcycle to a warehouse in Queens.
The owner was Matteo Moretti.
Alessandro’s younger half-brother.
A man everyone believed had died as a child.
Isabella had never mentioned him.
When Alessandro confronted her in prison, she turned pale.
“Matteo survived?”
“You knew he existed.”
“He was your father’s son with another woman.”
“Why was he hidden?”
“Because he was born sick.”
“That is not a reason.”
“In your father’s mind, it was.”
Isabella gripped the telephone.
“Your father sent him away.”
“Carlo found him years later.”
“Did Carlo raise him too?”
“No.”
“He did something worse.”
“What?”
“He promised Matteo everything you inherited.”
Matteo contacted Alessandro that night.
“You destroyed my birthright.”
“You threatened my family.”
“Our family.”
“You fired at Sophia.”
“I fired above her.”
“Do not expect gratitude for missing.”
Matteo laughed.
“You sound righteous now.”
“You surrendered businesses built with our father’s blood.”
“They were built with other people’s blood.”
“They belonged to us.”
“No.”
“They owned us.”
Matteo demanded a meeting.
Alessandro agreed.
Sophia objected.
“You do not know what he wants.”
“He wants recognition.”
“That does not make him safe.”
“No.”
“But it makes him predictable.”
Lucia joined Alessandro at the warehouse despite his objections.
“You do not get to order me away.”
“I am trying to protect you.”
“Ask.”
He took a breath.
“Will you please stay with Sophia?”
“No.”
They entered together.
Matteo stood beneath a single light.
He was thirty-two.
Thin.
Pale.
A metal brace supported one leg.
His face resembled Alessandro’s father.
“You brought the replacement daughter.”
Lucia’s hand tightened.
Alessandro stepped forward.
“She is not a replacement.”
“We were all replacements.”
Matteo held up a ledger.
“This contains the names of judges, officers, and businessmen still loyal to the old family.”
Agent Cole’s team waited outside.
Alessandro had agreed to record the meeting.
“What do you want?” he asked.
“My share.”
“There is no empire.”
“There are still accounts overseas.”
“They will be surrendered.”
“To the government?”
“To the victims.”
Matteo’s face twisted.
“Our father would spit on you.”
“Our father murdered a pregnant woman.”
“He abandoned you.”
“He abandoned me first!”
The shout echoed through the warehouse.
Matteo’s mask finally broke.
“He hid me in institutions.”
“He told people I was dead.”
“Carlo promised I would return as his successor.”
“Then Emma appeared.”
“Then Lucia appeared.”
“Then you destroyed everything before I could claim it.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“You wanted a throne built by the man who erased you.”
“It was mine.”
“No.”
“It was the only proof you mattered to him.”
Matteo’s eyes filled with rage.
He pulled a detonator.
Explosives lined the warehouse walls.
Lucia raised her gun.
Matteo smiled.
“Shoot me.”
“The trigger releases if my hand opens.”
Alessandro stepped between them.
“What would destroying us prove?”
“That I was the final Moretti.”
“You would be dead.”
“At least my name would be remembered.”
“No.”
Alessandro moved closer.
“You would become another story about a man our father destroyed.”
Matteo’s hand trembled.
“He loved you.”
“He tried to have me injured.”
“He killed the woman I loved.”
“He used my body to create a child.”
“He loved no one.”
Matteo’s face crumpled.
For the first time, he looked like an abandoned boy rather than an enemy.
Alessandro held out his hand.
“Give me the detonator.”
Matteo shook his head.
“There is nothing left for me.”
“There is a life he does not control.”
“I do not know how to live it.”
“Neither did I.”
Lucia lowered her gun.
“I didn’t either.”
Matteo looked at her.
“You hate him.”
“Sometimes.”
Alessandro glanced at her.
Lucia shrugged.
“He is learning.”
Matteo laughed weakly.
His fingers loosened.
Alessandro caught the detonator before it fell.
Federal agents entered.
Matteo did not resist.
As Cole placed him under arrest, Matteo looked at Alessandro.
“Will you visit me?”
Alessandro answered honestly.
“I do not know.”
Matteo nodded.
It was painful.
But it was not a lie.
The warehouse was cleared.
The final hidden accounts were recovered.
No new Moretti enemies emerged.
Weeks passed.
Then months.
The danger slowly became memory.
One spring morning, Sophia stood in the garden behind their new home.
It was not an estate.
It had no marble ballroom.
No armed guards in every hallway.
Emma ran through the grass wearing a flower crown.
Lucia had returned from her first semester at college.
Alessandro approached Sophia holding a small ring.
“You never answered me.”
Sophia smiled.
“You were interrupted.”
“You could answer now.”
She looked toward Emma.
Their daughter was painting yellow flowers on a wooden sign.
The sign read:
WELCOME HOME.
Sophia turned back to Alessandro.
“Yes.”
For the first time since she had met him, his expression opened completely.
He looked almost young.
Almost free.
Then Emma shouted from across the garden.
“Papa!”
Alessandro turned immediately.
Sophia saw the answer in that movement.
Blood had made him Emma’s father.
May you like
Choice had made him her papa.
