Chapter 9 - The Woman in the Video —

By breakfast, strangers had decided who I was.
Jealous.
Greedy.
Unable to give him a family.
That one made me put the phone down.
My company’s receptionist called at eight-thirty.
“Claire, we’re getting messages.”
“Threats?”
“Some. Mostly people saying they won’t work with us.”
“Save everything. Don’t answer.”
Julia arrived at the hotel carrying a laptop.
“We don’t argue with comment sections.”
“She used my miscarriages.”
Julia’s eyes lifted.
I showed her the new post.
A family friend had written that Ethan had spent years trapped in a marriage with a woman who refused to give him children.
Margaret had liked it.
For a moment, Julia looked as angry as I felt.
Then she opened a blank document.
“We can correct the property and payment claims without releasing your medical history.”
We drafted four sentences.
The property had been transferred under a signed divorce settlement. The event had not been authorized by its owner. The payment was under bank review. Further questions would go through counsel.
No insults.
No private grief offered up for inspection.
It felt too small.
Then Corinne called.
“I have the full security recording from the entrance and main hall. My team installed temporary cameras for event management. The contract discloses them.”
“Preserve it,” Julia said.
“I already have.”
“And don’t post anything.”
“I wasn’t planning to. But someone sent me the edited clip. They removed the part where Mrs. Whitmore grabbed Claire.”
A little of the pressure in my chest eased.
Facts existed outside my memory.
That mattered.
At noon, Ethan texted.
Please stop escalating this.
I answered once.
Your mother posted the video.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Then: I’ll talk to her.
I blocked the number.
An hour later, the hotel called my room.
“There’s a woman downstairs asking for you. Vanessa Whitmore.”
I nearly said no.
Then the clerk added, “She says she has something you need to hear.”
I met her in the lobby.
She looked exhausted.
No diamonds. No wedding glow.
She held her phone between both hands.
“Ethan called me last night.”
“Then you should call your lawyer.”
“I will.”
She pressed play.
Ethan’s voice came through the speaker.
May you like
“Mom’s planning to say Claire handled all the transfers.”
