Chapter 1 - The Strike and the Shattered Jaw

The wet slap of heavy cowhide hitting bare skin was the first thing that hit my ears when the front door swung open.
"Sign it, you little charity case, or I swear to God you won't make it to the delivery room!"
My key dropped from numb fingers. The foyer tile was cold, but the air inside my own home felt like a blast furnace stoked with pure poison. In the center of the sunken living room, my eight-month-pregnant wife, Emily, was curled into a tight, desperate ball on the hardwood floor. Both of her bruised arms were locked violently around her swollen belly, shielding our unborn baby boy from the blows raining down on her spine.
Towering over her was my twenty-six-year-old sister, Chloe. Her expensive blonde blowout was ruined with sweat, her designer silk blouse unbuttoned at the collar, and her knuckles white around the folded leather strap of my father’s heavy dress belt.
Sitting on our cream-colored Italian leather sofa, watching the beatdown like it was a Sunday afternoon golf tournament, were my parents. My mother, Eleanor, had a crystal tumbler of iced sweet tea balanced delicately on her knee. My father, Arthur, was casually thumbing through his phone, glancing up only to check if the blood had splattered onto the Persian rug.
"Chloe, stop! Please, think of the baby!" Emily wept, coughing on her own blood. A dark crimson trail trickled from the split corner of her mouth down her collarbone.
"Shut up! You're nothing without this family's name! You don't get to hoard what belongs to us!" Chloe screamed, her face contorting into an ugly, feral snarl as she raised the brass buckle above her head, aiming straight down at Emily’s ribs.
I didn't scream. I didn't shout a warning. Every ounce of civil humanity in my brain evaporated in a millisecond.
I cleared the fifteen feet of hardwood in two dead-sprint strides. As Chloe swung the belt downward, I caught her forearm in midair. The snap of her momentum jarring back through her shoulder sounded like dry twigs snapping. She gasped, turning her head with wide, startled eyes.
"Mark—"
I didn't let her finish. I rotated my hips, balled my right fist, and drove all two hundred and ten pounds of my frame directly into the center of her jaw.
The crack resonated off the high ceilings like a gunshot. Chloe’s head whipped sideways, spit and bright red blood spraying across the glass coffee table before her legs gave out completely. She crashed onto the floor, overturning a brass lamp, writhing and gasping for air as her jaw hung at an unnatural, slack angle.
"You son of a bitch!" my father roared, springing up from the sofa with his fists raised. "How dare you lay a hand on your sister in front of us!"
He lunged at me, his face purple with outrage. I didn't back up an inch. When his hands reached for my shirt, I stepped inside his reach and shoved both palms into his sternum with everything I had. Arthur flew backward, his lower back clipping the sofa table before his skull slammed into the drywall with a hollow thud that punched a fist-sized crater into the plaster. He slid to the floor, dazed, clutching his neck and groaning.
Emily dragged herself across the floor toward my work boots, trembling so violently that her teeth chattered like glass beads. In her blood-smeared, trembling fingers, she held a thick stack of legal documents.
"Mark... they made me... they tried to force my hand..." she choked out, her breath hitching on a ragged sob.
I knelt instantly, pulling her shuddering body against my chest. My left hand rested gently over our baby’s kick against her belly while my right snatched the papers from her fingers.
The bold legal header at the top made my stomach drop into a bottomless pit of ice: IRREVOCABLE ASSIGNMENT AND TRANSFER OF SOLE BENEFICIARY RIGHTS: THE STERLING-VANCE TRUST FUND.
It was an emergency transfer deed. It stipulated that the twelve-million-dollar trust left entirely to our unborn son by Emily’s late grandfather—a self-made industrialist who loathed my parasitic family—was to be surrendered immediately and irrevocably to Chloe Vance, along with all management power granted to Arthur and Eleanor Vance.
Before my brain could even process the sheer evil of what I was reading, my mother casually stood up. She didn't look at her daughter bleeding on the rug, nor at her husband groaning against the cracked drywall. She smoothed down her pleated linen skirt, walked over with a cold, dead look in her eyes, and extended a perfectly manicured hand toward the papers.
"Give those here, Mark," she commanded, her tone chillingly calm, as if she were asking for the morning mail. "Don't make this uglier than it already is. Family money belongs to real family. Your sister has private debts that could ruin our social standing, and an outsider like Emily doesn't get to sit on twelve million dollars while my daughter suffers."
I looked down at Emily's swollen eye, then up at the woman who gave birth to me. My vision went red around the edges.
"You broke into my home and beat my pregnant wife with a belt for money that isn't yours?" My voice dropped to a terrifying, deadly whisper.
My mother scoffed, crossing her arms. "She owes us. You both owe us. And if you think you're going to keep that trust out of our reach, Mark, you have another thing coming. Now pick your sister up and sign the witness line."
I stood up slowly, stepping between my mother and my wife. "The only place you people are going is a concrete cell."
I pulled my phone out and punched three numbers into the keypad on speaker.
"911, what is your emergency?" the dispatcher's calm voice echoed through the room.

"I need armed units and an advanced life support ambulance at 442 Whispering Pines Drive immediately," I said, staring straight into my mother’s widening eyes. "I have three intruders who just assaulted my eight-month-pregnant wife with a deadly weapon."
Chloe let out a muffled, blood-choked screech from the floor, while my mother’s arrogant sneer finally shattered into sheer panic. But as the sirens began wailing faintly in the distance, Emily suddenly let out a gut-wrenching scream, clutching her lower stomach as a dark, warm puddle began spreading rapidly through the fabric of her maternity dress.
