Chapter 11 - BOX 318

Lorelei had never opened box 318.

Daniel Mercer created it.

Unlike box 317, it was not registered under Lorelei’s name.

It belonged to a company.

Northstar Civic Partners.

Manuel recognized it immediately.

His family’s company had acquired Northstar seventeen years earlier.

“That means…”

Lorelei nodded.

“The box belongs to the Nelsons.”

Manuel called his mother.

Her silence told him enough.

“You knew Northstar?”

“Your grandfather bought it.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Mom.”

Another silence.

Then she admitted it.

“Because Daniel Mercer contacted him before he disappeared.”

Manuel felt betrayed.

“You knew about Durham?”

“No.”

“I knew Daniel suspected fraud.”

“Your grandfather tried to help.”

“Then why bury it?”

“Because Emmett threatened you.”

Manuel stopped.

“Me?”

“You were seven.”

His mother’s voice cracked.

“Your grandfather received photographs of you walking to school.”

Emmett had been using children as leverage for decades.

Manuel understood Rosalie differently after that.

Not because their experiences were equal.

They weren’t.

But because he finally understood how fear could turn decent people into silent accomplices.

Box 318 was located in a private vault beneath an old Nelson property.

Manuel’s grandfather had preserved it.

Inside were original contracts proving Emmett diverted more than sixty million dollars from public projects.

There were recordings of bribery.

Names of officials.

Bank transfers.

And a handwritten confession from Daniel Mercer.

But the most important item was a videotape.

Daniel faced the camera.

“If I disappear, Emmett Durham is responsible.”

He described the fraud.

The threats.

Then he mentioned Lorelei.

“She has nothing to do with this.”

“Protect her.”

“And protect her daughter.”

The video ended.

Rosalie stared at the blank screen.

That was enough.

Financial crimes.

Kidnapping.

False imprisonment.

Conspiracy.

Evidence tampering.

Possible murder.

Emmett’s empire began collapsing within hours.

Banks froze accounts.

Board members resigned.

Former employees started talking.

Then Maya discovered a transfer.

Emmett had withdrawn two million dollars that morning.

“He’s preparing to disappear.”

Rosalie shook her head.

“No.”

“What makes you so sure?”

“He still thinks he owns the ending.”

That evening, Rosalie received a photograph.

Pinecrest ballroom.

Empty.

One chair in the center.

Her childhood bracelet lay on the seat.

A message followed.

MIDNIGHT.

COME ALONE.

Manuel read it.

“No.”

Rosalie looked at him.

“I’m going.”

“No.”

“I spent twenty years doing what he told me because I was afraid of what would happen if I didn’t.”

She took the phone back.

“I’m not doing that anymore.”

“Going there is still doing what he told you.”

Rosalie paused.

Manuel stepped closer.

“You don’t have to prove you’re brave by walking into his trap.”

She looked at him for a long time.

Then something softened.

“You’re right.”

Maya smiled.

“Good.”

May you like

Rosalie looked at her.

“So we make it our trap instead.”
