Chapter 10 - The Other Buyer

Chloe sent the term sheet to Owen and Maya. The buyer was an investment group we had never dealt with before, offering cash and a fast closing. Its plans included selling several school properties, Valerie’s among them.

At the top of the list was her building.

“Can we stop the meeting?” I asked Owen.

“You’re on the board. We can demand time to review the buyer. But Richard has enough allies to push a vote unless we find a reason they cannot ignore.”

I knew how to find one.

For years I had run Sterling Holdings’ expansion team. I still had access to the files on every center we owned. I spent the afternoon tracing the purchase of Valerie’s school. The original nonprofit had agreed to sell because Richard’s company promised affordable tuition and a five-year lease.

The sale had closed eighteen months ago. Lucy was already a year old.

Richard had signed off personally.

I took the file to Valerie. She read it at her kitchen table while Lucy slept in the next room.

“He came here once,” she said.

I looked up.

“After the sale. I was leaving work, and he was across the street in his car. He rolled down the window and said he hoped I was managing well.”

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”

“I didn’t know the company owned the school. I thought he just wanted me to know he could find me.”

I wanted to apologize again. Instead, I asked what she needed.

“Keep my students in their classrooms,” she said. “Whatever happens between us, do that.”

I promised to try.

On my way out, she stopped me at the door.

“Carter. When Lucy asks about you, I’m going to tell her the truth in words she can understand.”

“What will you say?”

“That you didn’t know she was here. And when you found out, you came back.”

I carried those words into the board meeting the next morning.

Richard began by calling the sale an urgent opportunity. Chloe sat beside Malcolm across the table. My mother had come too, though she wasn’t a director. Owen had advised her to make herself available.

I laid out the lease promise and the new buyer’s property plan. Richard called it a misunderstanding.

Then Chloe’s attorney handed us the buyer’s ownership records.

Richard’s name wasn’t on them.

My mother’s was.
