Chapter 11 - THE SHOT

Caleb moved before he thought.
He shoved Emma aside.
The gun fired.
Caleb felt the impact.
Then nothing.
He hit the ground.
Grant screamed his name.
Police flooded the yard.
Victor ran.
Reed fired.
Victor disappeared between freight cars.
Grant dropped beside Caleb.
“Where are you hit?”
Caleb couldn’t answer.
Grant tore open his shirt.
The bullet had struck high in the shoulder.
Blood everywhere.
Emma knelt beside him crying.
“He saved me.”
Grant pressed both hands against the wound.
“Stay with me.”
Caleb looked at him weakly.
“You finally remembered my name.”
Grant laughed through tears.
“Shut up.”
Caleb smiled.
Then lost consciousness.
He woke in a hospital eighteen hours later.
Grant sat beside the bed.
Still wearing yesterday’s clothes.
Caleb opened one eye.
“You look terrible.”
Grant laughed.
“You got shot.”
“And somehow you look worse.”
Grant leaned back.
“Emma’s okay.”
Caleb closed his eyes in relief.
“Victor?”
“Gone.”
Caleb reopened his eyes.
Grant continued.
“Vanessa has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, financial crimes, and obstruction.”
“Good.”
“She’s cooperating.”
“Less good.”
Grant looked toward the window.
“She gave them Victor’s safe houses.”
“Any luck?”
“No.”
Caleb noticed something in Grant’s hand.
A folder.
“What’s that?”
Grant hesitated.
“My father’s private trust.”
Caleb frowned.
Grant opened it.
Charles Harrington had created a hidden compensation fund after Thomas Miller’s death.
Ten million dollars.
Never paid.
Never disclosed.
Grant looked ashamed.
“My father knew what he did.”
Caleb stared at the page.
“So he threw money at his conscience.”
“Yes.”
Grant pushed the folder toward him.
“It belongs to your family.”
Caleb didn’t touch it.
“My dad wasn’t worth ten million dollars.”
“I know.”
Grant swallowed.
“That’s not what I mean.”
Caleb stared at him for a long time.
Then a nurse entered.
“Mr. Harrington, police are asking for you.”
Grant stood.
“Why?”
She looked uneasy.
“They found another bomb.”
Caleb sat up despite the pain.
“Where?”
May you like
The nurse looked at him.
“Here.”
