Chapter 7 - What Caroline Knew

The ballroom had become unbearable.

Diane demanded privacy.

This time, people actually started moving away.

Marlene arranged for us to use a small conference room behind the wine cellar.

Inside were ten chairs, a long oak table, and a whiteboard with HAPPY WEDDING CAROLINE & ETHAN written in gold marker.

Nobody looked at it.

Preston sat at one end.

Diane sat opposite him.

Caroline stayed beside Ethan.

I took the chair near the door.

Marlene stood behind me.

Daniel Cross remained near the wall.

Diane spoke first.

“What trust?”

Preston looked at Daniel with pure hatred.

Daniel ignored him.

“The Whitmore Legacy Trust.”

Caroline said, “That’s mine and Tyler’s.”

Tyler was her younger brother.

Daniel nodded.

“Mostly.”

“What does mostly mean?”

Preston finally spoke.

“It was restructured.”

“When?”

Diane asked.

“Two years ago.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You told me the trust couldn’t be touched.”

Preston’s jaw flexed.

“I protected the business.”

“You used our children’s trust to secure debt?”

“I protected their inheritance!”

Daniel gave a small, exhausted laugh.

Preston turned on him.

“You have something to say?”

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You didn’t protect anything. You doubled down.”

Preston rose.

Marlene said, “Sit down.”

He glared at her.

Somehow, he sat.

Daniel opened a tablet.

“The Sonoma development lost twelve million.”

Caroline stared.

“Twelve?”

“Then Preston borrowed against Grayhaven.”

Diane covered her mouth.

“Then against the residences.”

Daniel continued.

“Then the trust.”

Caroline looked at her father.

“You told me Grayhaven was being sold because you wanted to retire.”

Preston said nothing.

I watched her face.

There was real shock there.

But not about everything.

Ethan noticed too.

“What did you know?”

She looked at him.

“I told you.”

“No.”

He leaned forward.

“You knew your dad wanted money from me.”

“I knew he wanted an investment.”

“How much?”

Her eyes flicked downward.

“Caroline.”

“One million.”

“You said one-point-five earlier.”

“It changed.”

“When?”

She didn’t answer.

He repeated the question.

“When?”

“Last week.”

Ethan leaned back.

“You knew before we got married.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then help me.”

“My family was in trouble.”

“So you married me without telling me you planned to ask for a million and a half dollars?”

“I married you because I love you!”

“Then why hide it?”

“Because I knew you’d react like this!”

His laugh was broken.

“Like what? Ask questions?”

Caroline looked at me.

“This is what she wanted.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You never liked me.”

“I didn’t know you well enough to dislike you.”

“You judged me.”

“I watched you.”

“That’s the same thing.”

“No. Judgment comes after.”

She stood.

“You think you’re better than me because you secretly have money?”

I stared at her.

“No.”

My voice softened.

“I think money made you believe you were better than me.”

Caroline’s mouth tightened.

Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.

He looked down.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Marlene asked.

He handed her the phone.

An email had arrived from his financial adviser.

Subject:

URGENT: AUTHORIZATION REQUEST.

Someone had submitted paperwork that afternoon requesting the transfer of $750,000 from Ethan’s investment account.

The receiving account belonged to Whitmore Family Holdings.

Ethan looked at Caroline.

May you like

“Did you do this?”

She went completely white.
