CHAPTER 2 — THE TRUTH INSIDE THE TRAILER

The response came three minutes later.
One sentence.
"That dog tag should be buried with Michael Reyes."
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
"If someone has it, they're connected to the people who killed him."
I looked toward the trailer.
Everything suddenly became bigger than a frightened child and a cruel man at a gas station.
This wasn't just about Lucy.
This was about a secret someone had spent years trying to bury.
David stepped closer.
“You should really leave.”
His voice was different now.
No fake kindness.
No pretending.
Just a warning.
“You don't know what kind of situation you're getting involved in.”
I smiled slightly.
“You're right.”
I put my phone away.
“I don't know everything.”
I looked at Lucy.
“But I know enough.”
The man's jaw tightened.
Then he reached inside his jacket.
Lucy gasped.
“He has a gun.”
The entire parking lot froze.
But David didn't pull it out.
Not yet.
Because he knew cameras were watching.
People were watching.
He needed control.
Men like him always needed control.
“You have no idea what you're doing,” he whispered.
Then he turned toward the trailer.
“Your old man instincts are going to get someone hurt.”
I looked at the chain around the trailer door.
“Who is inside?”
He didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
I walked toward the trailer.
David moved quickly.
Too quickly.
I stepped between him and the door.
“Move.”
“No.”
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then a voice came from inside.
Weak.
Broken.
“Lucy?”
The little girl's entire face changed.
“Mom!”
She ran forward.
I caught her shoulder before she reached the trailer.
“Wait.”
Because the lock wasn't the only problem.
The chain was new.
The padlock was expensive.
Someone wanted this woman trapped.
But they also wanted everyone to believe she was never there.
I grabbed a tire iron from my motorcycle bag.
David laughed.
“You think you're some kind of hero?”
I looked at him.
“No.”
I struck the lock.
The metal cracked.
“I think I'm someone who showed up.”
One more hit.
The lock fell.
The trailer door opened.
Inside was a woman.
Her wrists were bruised.
Her face was exhausted.
But when she saw Lucy...
she broke.
“My baby.”
Lucy ran into her arms.
The mother held her like she was afraid someone would take her away again.
Then her eyes moved to me.
To the dog tag hanging from my hand.
Her face went pale.
“Where did you get that?”
I didn't answer.
Instead, I asked:
“Who is Michael Reyes?”
The woman started crying.
Because she knew that name.
“He saved me.”
The gas station went silent.
“Years ago, Michael rescued me from a trafficking ring.”
She looked at David.
“He was trying to expose them.”
David stepped backward.
“You don't know what you're saying.”
But the woman did.
“He found evidence.”
Her voice became stronger.
“He found the names.”
She looked at the dog tag.
“Before they killed him, he gave this to me.”
I looked at David.
“And how did you get it?”
The woman's face filled with fear.
“Because he's one of them.”
That was the moment everything changed.
David wasn't running away with a wife and daughter.
He was running from the evidence that could destroy him.
May you like
And Lucy wasn't just a kidnapped child.
She was the only person who had managed to steal back the key to the truth.
