Chapter 1 - THE COURTYARD

“GET THAT CHILD AWAY FROM HIM!”

Grant Whitmore’s shout cracked across the courtyard.

Three-year-old Lily Bennett sat on the frozen stones with one hand on the enormous black dog everyone at the estate feared.

Atlas was still growling.

A handler backed toward the house, clutching a torn sleeve. Two guards stood ten feet away, unwilling to come closer. Lily’s mother, Claire, had just stepped outside carrying a basket of clean towels. When she saw her daughter beside the dog, the basket slipped from her hands.

“Lily,” she said. “Sweetheart, come here.”

Lily looked up at her. Then she looked back at Atlas.

“He’s cold.”

She pulled a white washcloth from beside her knee and laid it gently across the dog’s wet shoulder.

One guard reached inside his coat.

“Hands where I can see them,” Grant said.

The guard froze.

Atlas turned his head toward Lily. He could have knocked her over with one movement. Instead, he stopped growling. His heavy body sank slowly to the stone, and he placed his head in her lap.

Nobody spoke.

Grant took a step forward. “Atlas. Come.”

One black ear lifted. The dog stayed where he was.

Grant tried again. Atlas closed his eyes while Lily rubbed the fur behind his ear.

Claire crossed the courtyard, keeping her movements slow. She knelt beside Lily and held out her arms. “Let’s go inside.”

“He needs his nap first,” Lily whispered.

Grant watched the dog. For ten years, Atlas had come when he called. The dog slept outside his bedroom and followed him through a house full of people Grant trusted far less. Now Atlas would not leave a little girl he had met five minutes ago.

“I’m sorry,” Claire said. “She slipped out while I was folding laundry.”

“Take her inside,” Grant answered.

Claire gathered Lily into her arms. Atlas rose at once.

Every guard stiffened. But the dog merely followed them to the servants’ entrance and lay down outside it.

From beyond the iron gates, hidden between two bare trees, a camera clicked three times.

The first photograph caught Lily touching Atlas.

The second caught Grant watching her.

The third caught the dog refusing to follow his master.

Inside the courtyard, no one heard a thing.

By morning, those photographs would be in the hands of a man Grant had spent eleven years trying to keep away from his home.
