Chapter 13 - Come Alone

Emily showed Maya the message immediately.
Later, she told me that was the hardest choice she had made all week.
“Part of me wanted to go.”
“I know.”
“I still don’t know everything about you.”
“You don’t owe me blind trust.”
The message named a storage facility on the edge of town.
It included a photograph of Ruth’s handwriting.
Emily recognized it.
So did the investigators.
Ruiz arranged the response.
Nobody asked Emily to play bait.
She stayed with Maya while officers went to the facility with the necessary authorization and coordinated with the manager.
Sarah was there.
She had rented the unit under the consulting company that paid Ruth.
Inside were boxes of foundation records, personal documents, and belongings Ruth had apparently surrendered over the years.
Sarah was loading them into a car when officers arrived.
She tried to leave.
They stopped her at the gate.
The arrest happened without the dramatic speech I had imagined.
No confession.
No collapse.
According to Ruiz, Sarah asked for her lawyer.
Then she asked whether reporters were outside.
The unit contained one thing Emily cared about more than everything else.
A sealed envelope.
For Emily, when I’m gone.
Ruth’s handwriting.
The letter was eleven pages.
Maya offered to read it first.
Emily shook her head.
“I’m tired of other people knowing my life before I do.”
She read while I waited across the room.
Sometimes she stopped.
Once, she pressed the page flat with both hands.
Then she asked me to sit beside her.
Ruth described carrying the baby out.
Clara’s voice behind her.
Sarah at the east exit, grabbing her arm.
Sarah saying James had authorized a private transfer.
Later, Sarah saying Clara was dead and returning the baby would send Ruth to prison.
Then came the line Emily read aloud.
“I believed her the first night. After that, I was afraid, and after enough years, I was selfish.”
Emily swallowed.
“She knew.”
“Yes.”
“She loved me and still knew.”
The last page held Ruth’s apology.
Not a request for forgiveness.
An admission that she had waited too long to tell the truth.
Tucked behind it was a small photograph of Emily as a toddler.
On the back, Ruth had written her real birthday.
Emily traced the date.
Then Ruiz called Maya.
A recording device had been recovered from the storage unit.
May you like
Ruth had secretly recorded a meeting with Sarah.
And Sarah had talked about the fire.
