Chapter 6 - The Secret Buried With My Grandfather

The file changed everything.
For two days, I believed Grant was the entire story.
The mastermind.
The person who created the lie.
But the documents in my hands suggested something much darker.
The night before my grandfather died, he signed an agreement.
An agreement connected to Harbor Shield Recovery.
An agreement connected to my name.
I studied the document again.
The signature was unmistakable.
Thomas Moore.
My grandfather.
The man who taught me to stand tall.
The man who told me my worth did not come from anyone's approval.
Why would he sign something connected to Grant?
I couldn't understand.
The federal agent watched me carefully.
“There is more.”
He handed me another folder.
Inside were old financial records.
Twenty years old.
Before Harbor Shield Recovery existed.
Before Grant had control.
Before anyone knew my identity would become valuable.
The records showed payments.
Large payments.
Made from a family account.
To a private consulting company.
I looked at the name.
“Who is this?”
The agent answered.
“Someone who helped create the original structure behind Harbor Shield.”
My heart sank.
“Who?”
He paused.
Then said:
“Your grandfather’s former business partner.”
I stared at him.
“Robert Hale?”
The agent nodded.
I knew that name.
Everyone in my family knew that name.
Robert Hale had been my grandfather's closest friend.
Until they suddenly stopped working together.
Nobody ever explained why.
My grandfather refused to talk about it.
I always thought it was just a business disagreement.
Now I wasn't so sure.
The next morning, I returned to court.
Grant noticed immediately.
He knew something had changed.
That was the difference between us.
Grant could read people.
He always could.
But he couldn't read the truth.
The prosecutor began the day with a new statement.
“Your Honor, the government has discovered evidence suggesting the defendant’s fraud was part of a larger plan involving family assets and historical business agreements.”
Grant's face changed.
Only for a second.
But it happened.
He knew.
The prosecutor displayed old documents.
My grandfather's signature appeared on the screen.
The courtroom reacted.
My mother whispered:
“No.”
My father looked confused.
Grant looked terrified.
The prosecutor turned toward him.
“Mr. Moore, did you know about these agreements?”
Grant remained silent.
His lawyer objected.
The judge ordered him to answer.
Finally, Grant spoke.
“I don't understand what you're suggesting.”
The prosecutor smiled slightly.
“We are suggesting you were not the creator of this plan.”
A pause.
“We are suggesting you inherited it.”
The courtroom exploded.
I looked at Grant.
For the first time, I saw something different.
Not arrogance.
Not confidence.
Fear.
Real fear.
Because whatever secret was hidden inside those documents…
Grant knew about it.
And he knew it was worse than the fraud charges already against him.
The prosecutor approached me later.
“Lieutenant Moore, we need to prepare you for tomorrow.”
“For what?”
He looked serious.
“The person who knows the truth about the beginning of this will testify.”
“Who?”
He paused.
Then answered.
“Robert Hale.”
I felt a chill.
Because suddenly this wasn't only about my brother.
It wasn't only about my parents.
It was about a secret my family had buried for decades.
May you like
And tomorrow…
That secret was finally coming back.
