Chapter 11 - What Robert Hid

My hands shook as I opened the envelope.

Inside were two letters and the original will.

The first letter was dated six months before Robert died.

Diane,

I’m frightened that after I’m gone, Jason will drift away from this family. The cabin holds our best memories. I thought leaving it to him might keep him close to you.

I read the sentence twice.

Robert had not been trying to take the cabin from me.

He had been trying, clumsily, to protect me from being alone.

The second letter was dated five days before his death.

Diane,

I made a mistake. Jason came to see me today. Sarah spent the entire visit asking about the cabin, the land, and our accounts. Jason looked uncomfortable but said nothing.

I no longer believe giving him the property would protect you. It might place you at risk.

I asked Walter to destroy the new will and restore the original plan. If that has not happened, know this: the cabin is yours. Keep it, sell it, burn it down if that brings you peace. Do not let anyone use my love for our son as a weapon against you.

I covered my mouth.

Jason turned away, crying.

Robert had seen the danger before either of us admitted it.

The original will in the envelope was marked REVOKED in Robert’s handwriting. His attorney, Walter Hayes, had countersigned the revocation.

Evelyn called Walter.

He remembered everything.

Robert had revoked the second will and confirmed that the survivorship deed should remain untouched. Walter had believed all copies of the abandoned will were destroyed.

Sarah must have stolen one before the revocation.

“We can prove it has no legal force,” Evelyn said.

Jason sat in Robert’s chair.

“Dad knew I was weak.”

“No,” I said. “He knew you avoided conflict.”

“What’s the difference?”

“Weakness is believing you cannot change. Avoidance is a choice you can stop making.”

He looked at me.

“What happens now?”

“Sarah faces what she did.”

“And us?”

“That depends on what you do next.”

The following morning, Evelyn filed an emergency action voiding the fraudulent deed. The court froze all transactions involving my properties.

By afternoon, the story reached local news.

The headline read:

WIDOW ACCUSES FAMILY OF CHRISTMAS PROPERTY SCHEME.

Sarah was released on bond.

She called Jason seventeen times.

He ignored the first sixteen.

On the seventeenth, he answered and put her on speaker.

Sarah’s voice was soft.

“Jason, I’m pregnant.”

My son went completely still.

Then Sarah added, “If you testify against me, you will never see your child.”
