Chapter 11 - On the First Ring —

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

Emma had moved back that afternoon. Claire was with her, but Claire’s car was trapped behind a delivery truck whose driver had disappeared into the building next door.

“I’m coming.”

“Don’t speed.”

“I won’t.”

I kept her on the phone through the elevator, then switched to the car’s hands-free system.

She had already spoken to her care team. They wanted her evaluated.

I didn’t ask whether it could wait.

I didn’t tell her she was probably fine.

“I’m eight minutes away,” I said.

“Okay.”

Her breathing changed.

“Emma?”

“I’m scared.”

“I’m here.”

A year earlier, I might have followed that with a promise I couldn’t make.

Everything will be okay.

This time, I let the truth be smaller.

“I’m coming, and I’ll stay.”

Claire met me at the door with Emma’s bag.

Emma moved slowly down the front steps. I offered my hand. After a brief hesitation, she took it.

It was a practical gesture.

I knew better than to make it more.

At the hospital, I parked where the staff directed me and helped her inside. Claire followed a few minutes later.

The questions came quickly.

Symptoms. Timing. Appointments.

Emma answered. When she lost her place, I held up the folder she had asked me to bring.

The nurse took her through the doors.

I stopped.

Emma looked back.

For one second, I couldn’t tell whether she wanted me there.

So I asked.

“Do you want me to wait?”

“Yes.”

“Here?”

She nodded.

I sat.

Hours moved strangely in that hallway.

My phone buzzed with a call from a business partner.

I sent one message.

Family medical emergency. I’m unavailable.

Then I turned off work notifications.

Not my phone.

Never my phone.

Claire came out after midnight.

“They’re keeping her.”

I stood too quickly.

“Is she—”

“She wants the doctor to explain.”

Inside, Emma looked at me, then toward the empty chair.

“You can sit.”

I did.

A physician pulled up another chair and spoke carefully, explaining that continued pregnancy now carried concerns they needed to weigh against delivering early.

I listened until the words settled into something I could understand.

Our daughter might be coming sooner than we planned.

Emma’s fingers tightened around the edge of her blanket.

“Tonight?” she asked.

May you like

The doctor paused.

“Possibly.”
