CHAPTER 5 — The Conversation That Should Have Happened Years Ago

Three weeks later...

Matthew entered the breakfast room expecting another silent meal.

Instead...

Alexander stood up.

He looked terrified.

More nervous than during billion-dollar negotiations.

Then...

Using clumsy hands...

He signed.

"Good... morning... son."

The grammar was terrible.

Several signs were backwards.

Matthew stared in complete shock.

Alexander continued.

"I... learning."

"I'm... sorry."

The last sign broke halfway through because his hands were trembling too much.

Matthew's eyes filled with tears.

Not because the signs were perfect.

Because they weren't.

His father had finally chosen effort over excuses.

Matthew slowly walked across the room.

Then hugged him.

Alexander wrapped his arms around his son.

May you like

It was the first hug they had shared in almost five years.

Neither wanted to let go.
