Chapter 6 - WHEN THE PERFECT HUSBAND CRACKED

Lorenzo lunged at him.

Not with words.

With both hands.

He grabbed Sergio by the jacket before security pulled them apart.

“Shut your mouth!”

The dock went silent.

That was the moment my marriage ended.

Not when I learned about the affair.

Not when I learned Tomás existed.

Not even when I realized Lorenzo had hidden his own son.

It ended when I saw naked panic in my husband’s face at the mention of Júlia’s brakes.

Two police officers entered the loading dock.

Nobody moved.

Sergio looked almost pleased.

“Ask him,” he said.

One officer separated him from the guards.

“Ask who?”

“Lorenzo.”

Lorenzo regained control quickly.

He always did.

“This man is trying to save himself.”

“From what?” I asked.

He ignored me.

Sergio started laughing again.

“You really still think you’re smarter than everybody.”

“Stop talking.”

“I kept copies.”

Lorenzo’s face went white.

“Copies of what?” the officer asked.

Sergio nodded toward the phone.

“Everything.”

Police took both men into separate rooms.

Lorenzo was not arrested immediately.

There wasn’t enough yet.

But his lawyers arrived within thirty minutes.

So did detectives.

And once detectives started asking questions, the charity gala officially collapsed.

I walked back onto the ballroom stage.

Hundreds of people stared at me.

Someone had already posted video online.

Phones were everywhere.

I took the microphone.

“This event is over.”

Murmurs spread across the room.

I forced myself to continue.

“There is evidence of serious misconduct involving the leadership of this foundation.”

Lorenzo’s board chairman stood.

“Beatriz, perhaps we should discuss this privately.”

“No.”

That word again.

Powerful little word.

I looked across the room.

“If you donated money, preserve your receipts.”

A photographer raised his camera.

“If you worked with Lorenzo Rinaldi or Sergio Almeida, preserve your emails and messages.”

Another flash.

“And if anyone asks you to delete anything, don’t.”

The chairman looked furious.

“Do you understand what you’re doing?”

I thought of Tomás flinching from my hand.

“Yes.”

Then I brought the boys out.

I did not put Tomás on display.

I didn’t show his bruises.

I simply held his hand.

A reporter shouted, “Who is the boy?”

I answered, “A child who should have been protected.”

That was all.

Later that night, police opened Sergio’s locker.

Inside they found Júlia’s phone.

Copies of bank transfers.

Photographs of the basement.

And a small recorder.

One detective pressed play.

Static crackled.

Then a woman’s voice filled the room.

Júlia.

“I know what you’re doing with the foundation money.”

A man answered.

Lorenzo.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I made copies.”

Then Lorenzo said something that made every detective look up.

“Think about your son before you decide how brave you want to be.”
