Chapter 12 - THE BOX

The bank manager looked at me like I had walked in from a ghost story.
“Elena Morales?”
“Yes.”
He checked the paperwork again.
“This authorization is eight years old.”
“I know.”
“And Robert Vale named you specifically.”
Daniel stood beside me.
“What did he leave?”
The manager shook his head.
“I have no idea.”
The box was longer than I expected.
Inside sat three things.
A leather notebook.
A sealed envelope.
And a small digital recorder.
The envelope had my name on it.
I opened it.
Elena,
If you are reading this, then I failed to fix what I allowed to happen.
I believed sending you away temporarily would keep you safe.
Vivian told me you had accepted money and left Daniel willingly.
I later learned that was false.
By then, she had hidden your location from me as well.
I tried to find you.
I am sorry.
Robert.
My eyes blurred.
Daniel put one hand against the table.
I kept reading.
Victor knows you saw the foundation ledger.
He believes you copied it.
You did not.
I did.
The notebook is the copy.
The recorder contains conversations with Victor and others.
Give everything to someone you trust.
And if Daniel is with you when you read this, tell my son I was proud of him.
Even when I failed him.
Daniel turned away.
I closed the letter.
He covered his mouth with one hand.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then we opened the notebook.
Names.
Transfers.
Dates.
Account numbers.
Payments stretching across fifteen years.
Victor Mercer wasn’t just stealing charity money.
He was using Vale contracts to hide kickbacks and bribes.
Daniel read faster.
“Here.”
He pointed.
A payment to Dr. Harlan.
Three days before Robert died.
Another payment one day after.
I felt sick.
We played the recorder.
Robert’s voice filled the small bank room.
“Victor, I’m done protecting this.”
Victor answered.
“You turn that ledger over and you take Vale down with me.”
“I’ll take that chance.”
“You think your wife will?”
“She doesn’t know.”
“She knows enough.”
Then Vivian’s voice appeared.
“Stop this.”
Daniel froze.
The recording continued.
Victor said, “You already handled the girl. Handle your husband.”
Vivian answered.
“I will not hurt Robert.”
“But you’ll protect the company.”
Silence.
Then Vivian said something quieter.
“I’ll stop him from going public.”
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at the recorder.
“She knew Victor wanted Dad stopped.”
I said nothing.
He called Owens.
Federal investigators took possession of the evidence that afternoon.
By evening, Dr. Harlan had been arrested attempting to board a flight to Switzerland.
At 9:17 p.m., Vivian Vale was taken from her house for questioning.
News vans filled the street.
Daniel stood across from me watching his mother enter an unmarked car.
“You okay?” I asked.
“No.”
I understood.
He looked at me.
“I spent half my life believing my family was powerful.”
He laughed once.
“We were just really good at hiding damage.”
My phone rang.
Claire.
“Elena.”
Something in her voice scared me.
“What happened?”
“It’s Mia.”
My heart stopped.
May you like
“What about her?”
“She’s gone.”
