Chapter 4 - WHAT GRACE LEFT BEHIND

Richard’s wife, Grace, had died the day the triplets were born. For five years, he had kept the room that had been hers locked and the grief that came with it just as tightly sealed.
He knew Grace had left money to their sons. He had signed the trust documents himself. But he had let his lawyers handle the details, unable to bear another meeting about a future she would never see.
Now he pulled his phone from his pocket and called the attorney who had drafted the trust.
Elaine Brooks answered on the third ring.
“Richard? It’s almost eight.”
“I need you to tell me exactly what Grace left the boys.”
Elaine was quiet for a beat. “Why?”
“Because Victoria knows something I don’t.”
Within twenty minutes, Elaine joined them on a secure video call. Richard told her about the recording and sent the documents to her office.
Elaine’s expression hardened as she read the travel consent.
“This signature is false,” she said. “And these forms are missing the required authorization from the boys’ independent trustee.”
“Who’s the trustee?” Emily asked.
“I am, until they turn twenty-one.”
Richard looked stunned. “Why didn’t I know that?”
“You did. Grace explained it before the boys were born. You were at the signing.”
He remembered the room, the rain against the windows, and Grace holding his hand under the table. He did not remember listening.
Elaine went on. Grace had owned a significant stake in Hawthorne Technologies before she married Richard. She had helped build its earliest products. Her shares were held for the boys, and the trust gave Elaine power to block their transfer or sale.
“If someone could take control of the boys’ legal affairs,” Elaine said, “they might try to challenge the trust. They would have a long fight, but an overseas placement could make it harder for us to protect the boys quickly.”
Priya turned toward Richard. “Victoria’s brother Adrian advises an investment group. They’ve been trying to buy Grace’s shares.”
Richard remembered dismissing their offer three months ago. Victoria had called the proposal harmless. He had believed her.
Elaine asked to see every file on the drive. As she reviewed them, Emily took the boys to the kitchenette for more crackers. Liam stayed close to her.
“I thought Dad would believe Victoria again,” he said.
Emily knelt. “You were brave to tell him.”
“I was scared.”
“You can be both.”
Back in the conference room, Elaine had opened a photograph from the drive. It showed a document on Victoria’s desk with a list of names and dates.
One entry was circled in red:
EMILY CARTER — REMOVE BY FRIDAY.
Below it was another line.
TRANSFER BOYS — MONDAY, 6:40 A.M.
Elaine looked straight into the camera. “Richard, we need to protect the boys tonight.”
May you like
Then Priya’s phone buzzed.
The front desk had received a call from a man claiming to be the boys’ grandfather. He said he was coming to take them home.
