Chapter 12 - SISTERS

David stopped.

Police lights flashed across the water.

Lucinda stood between him and the boat.

Her hair was wet.

Her clothes were muddy.

There was blood on her cheek.

Andrew stepped closer despite Sarah shouting at him to stay back.

Lucinda saw him.

Her expression cracked.

“Andrew.”

He stared at the gun.

“Put it down.”

David laughed.

“Listen to him, Lucy.”

“Don’t call me that.”

“You think saving him now changes anything?”

Lucinda’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

“Then move.”

“No.”

David raised his gun.

Lucinda raised hers.

Andrew shouted, “Both of you, stop!”

David looked at him.

“You really want to know why your wife died?”

Andrew’s face hardened.

“I saw the video.”

“No. You saw what happened.”

David smiled.

“You still don’t know why.”

Lucinda whispered, “Shut up.”

David laughed.

“Caroline found out Lucinda loved you.”

Andrew flinched.

“She confronted her sister. Told her she was sick. Told her she needed to leave the house.”

Lucinda’s eyes closed.

David continued.

“But that wasn’t enough to make Lucinda kill her.”

Andrew looked at her.

“What was?”

David said, “Caroline found out Lucinda wasn’t just stealing money.”

Lucinda whispered, “David.”

“She was changing your will.”

Andrew stared.

David smiled.

“She wanted you.”

Lucinda’s face twisted.

“No.”

“She wanted your life.”

“No!”

“She wanted your son.”

Lucinda screamed, “I NEVER WANTED TO HURT ALEX!”

The dock fell silent.

Andrew whispered, “Then why Caroline?”

Lucinda looked at him.

For the first time, the anger disappeared.

What remained was exhaustion.

“She said she was taking Alex and leaving.”

Andrew stared.

“She was leaving me?”

“No.”

Lucinda shook her head.

“She was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

“From David.”

David’s smile vanished.

Lucinda continued.

“She discovered he had been stealing from your company before I ever got involved.”

David said, “Careful.”

“She came to me because she knew I had feelings for you.”

Andrew looked sick.

“She asked me to help her expose him.”

Elizabeth had reached the boathouse door.

She listened.

Lucinda cried.

“I agreed.”

Andrew whispered, “Then what happened?”

“I got greedy.”

Her voice broke.

“David told me Caroline would always control everything. He said you would never see me while she was alive.”

Andrew shook his head.

“So you helped him kill her.”

Lucinda began sobbing.

“I pushed her because I was angry. But she didn’t fall.”

Andrew’s voice turned cold.

“You helped carry her.”

“Yes.”

“You watched him hit her.”

“Yes.”

“You watched him poison her.”

Lucinda dropped her gaze.

“Yes.”

Andrew’s eyes filled with tears.

“And then you came into my house. Ate at my table. Held my son.”

Lucinda whispered, “I hated myself every day.”

Alex’s voice came from behind Elizabeth.

“You hated Mom more.”

Everyone turned.

Andrew’s face filled with panic.

“Alex! Why are you here?”

The boy stepped forward holding his stuffed rabbit.

Lucinda looked at him.

Alex stared back.

Then David moved.

May you like

Fast.

His gun swung toward Alex.
