THE BOY WHO CHOSE THE MAID / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - WHAT NOAH HEARD

Every adult in the room turned toward Noah.

Mrs. Bell spoke first. “I never said that, sweetheart.”

“You did.” Noah looked at Alexander. “When I was sick.”

Alexander knelt. “Tell me what you remember.”

“I woke up. Mrs. Bell was by my bed. She said Mommy Hannah tried to come home, but Grandma wouldn’t open the door.”

Eleanor gripped the back of a chair.

“That’s enough,” she said.

“No,” Alexander replied. “It isn’t.”

Noah began rubbing Bunny’s ear. I recognized the sign that he was overwhelmed.

“We can stop,” I told him. “You did a good job.”

Alexander took him upstairs. I stayed behind.

Mrs. Bell finally looked shaken. Eleanor looked furious.

“Was Hannah alive after the accident?” I asked.

“Of course not,” Eleanor snapped.

“Then why tell Noah that story?”

“I did not,” Mrs. Bell said.

Marcus entered with a tablet. Noah’s bedroom camera had no audio, but the hall intercom recorded short clips when someone pressed the call button. At 1:13 that morning, Mrs. Bell had used it to ask the night nurse for a glass of water.

The recording continued for eighteen seconds after the nurse answered.

Noah’s sleepy voice was faint but clear.

“Did Mommy come home?”

Then Mrs. Bell’s voice:

“She wanted to. Your grandmother wouldn’t let her.”

Eleanor sat down.

Mrs. Bell reached for the tablet. Marcus stepped back.

Alexander returned in time to hear the recording a second time.

“Explain it,” he said.

Mrs. Bell’s eyes filled with tears. “I was talking about Lena. Noah called her Mommy for a few months after Hannah died.”

“You said Hannah,” Alexander replied.

“I made a mistake.”

Eleanor stared at the floor.

Alexander turned to her. “Did Hannah try to come home?”

“She and I argued the day before the accident,” Eleanor said. “She left the house angry. I said things I regret.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“She called that night. I didn’t answer.”

The room went quiet.

“Hannah left me a message,” Eleanor said. “By the time I listened to it, she was gone.”

Alexander looked as though he might be sick.

Mrs. Bell wiped her face. “I told Noah because I thought he should know Hannah wanted to return.”

“He is five,” I said. “You used her death to scare him.”

She looked at me then, and the tears disappeared.

“You’ve been here eight months,” she said. “You have no idea what happened in this family.”

May you like

Alexander asked Marcus to escort her from the property pending an investigation. Mrs. Bell removed her keys and placed them on the table.

As she passed me, she whispered, “Check the date on Hannah’s last message.”
