Chapter 7 - WHAT HER FATHER KNEW

Evelyn opened Charles Cross's letter in the ambulance.
A paramedic was cleaning a cut on her arm.
Rachel sat across from her.
Noah had an oxygen mask over his face.
He looked furious about it.
Evelyn unfolded the letter.
Evie.
If Daniel has shown you these documents, then he has made his choice.
Her father's voice seemed to rise from the page.
Cold.
Controlled.
Certain.
Daniel is weak.
He always has been.
Evelyn's jaw tightened.
Rachel watched her.
Evelyn did.
The company cannot survive scandal.
Sometimes protecting a family requires removing the person threatening it.
Evelyn stopped.
Noah removed the oxygen mask.
“What does it say?”
Rachel gently put it back.
Evelyn continued.
I have arranged for Daniel's situation to resolve itself.
Her hand began trembling.
Rachel whispered, “Oh God.”
The next line was worse.
You will understand one day when everything belongs to you.
Evelyn lowered the letter.
The paramedic asked, “Ma'am?”
“I'm fine.”
She wasn't.
Charles had known Daniel might expose him.
He had planned something.
Maybe the crash.
Maybe worse.
But there was more.
A final paragraph.
If Rachel remains a problem, Martin will handle it.
Evelyn looked up.
“Martin.”
Rachel's face hardened.
“The lawyer.”
“He knew.”
Noah pulled off the mask again.
“So call the police.”
This time nobody corrected him.
Evelyn called Detective Julian Price.
She knew him through corporate security.
He arrived at the hospital forty minutes later.
Victor Shaw had survived the fire.
Barely.
He was under guard.
Price read the documents.
His expression became increasingly grim.
“This is enough to reopen Daniel's death.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
Evelyn asked, “What about Martin Vale?”
“We'll bring him in.”
“Don't call him first.”
Price looked up.
“Why?”
“Because if he's involved, he'll run.”
Price nodded.
Noah sat on the examination bed.
“What happens to my mom?”
Everyone turned.
“What do you mean?” Rachel asked.
“If these people were after me because of money.”
Rachel stared at him.
Noah continued.
“Do they stop now?”
Detective Price didn't lie.
“I don't know.”
Rachel's face went pale.
Evelyn stood.
“They will.”
Rachel looked at her.
“You can't promise that.”
“Yes, I can.”
“You couldn't protect Daniel.”
The words came out sharper than Rachel intended.
Silence followed.
Noah looked down.
Rachel exhaled.
“Evelyn—”
“No.”
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“You're right.”
Rachel looked surprised.
“I couldn't.”
Evelyn's eyes burned.
“But I can protect him.”
Noah looked at her.
For twelve years, Evelyn had built herself into something untouchable.
Her clothes.
Her apartment.
Her office.
Her company.
Everything polished.
Everything controlled.
She finally understood why.
Chaos had taken Daniel.
So she had spent her life trying to make chaos impossible.
But chaos didn't care about expensive marble.
Or perfect schedules.
It simply waited.
Detective Price's phone rang.
He listened.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Evelyn watched him.
Price ended the call.
“Martin Vale's office is empty.”
Rachel whispered, “He ran.”
Price shook his head.
“Not exactly.”
He held up the phone.
“His secretary found blood on the floor.”
Noah stared.
“Whose?”
Price looked at Evelyn.
“We don't know.”
Then Evelyn's phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A text.
You found Daniel's box.
Stop now.
Or the boy finishes what his father started.
Evelyn stared at the message.
Then another arrived.
A photograph.
May you like
Noah outside the hospital.
Taken less than thirty seconds earlier.
